Question Anybody know anything about plumbing ?

I am replacing my old kitchen faucet. The new faucet has the attached braided type of hot and cold water supply lines that have the female fitting that attaches to the male fitting at the supply cut off valve. Inside the female fitting are little rubber o rings. My question is - is it necessary to wrap the male fittings with teflon tape to prevent leaks or will leaks be prevented by the compression of the little rubber o rings ?

it's rare that I reuse "O" rings...replacing with new is easy n cheap..... new or old, "refresh" with a lite coating of Silicon Grease prior to reasembly

Paul whatever happened to that beautiful old commercial gas range you had stashed in the barn? (Sorry for the drift Cap’n, but you don’t need Teflon tape. )

They aren't o rings though are they. Flat rubber washers/ seals.
And yes you do, as you fit the shut off taps as well.

What he said. The Teflon tape won't hurt, but not necessary. (I prefer the Teflon pipe dope you paint on with a brush).

I'm in the "can't hurt might help" camp so use both dope on the female threads and tape on the male side, especially on those slip joint p-trap assemblies where the gasket is supposed to prevent leaks but often doesn't. There's nothing more disheartening than finishing a plumbing job and then having to tear everything apart to fix a leak.

tape and dope do nada for that type of fitting. if your compression washer fails the water leaks through the top of the nut where the tube passes through, not the threads.

I agree on compression washers. On slip joint fittings, I wrap the SJ washer with teflon tape before assembly. It seems to help.

"Gasket sealed" joints require no "sealant" (teflon tape does behave as a thread lubricant, I prefer Epifanes oil based varnish or any old oil paint, for that sort of work, and avoid tape like the plague)
Lee is correct, tape won't do anything in that application.

If I see teflon tape on a joint that has another method of sealing, it rings bells about the bodger who fitted it. So look around for other problems.

I just noticed that Lowes wants $2.49 for that 35 cent roll, Tractor Supply will sell 2 rolls for $1.99. I'm good here, my father had about 10 rolls around in various places here.

I used teflon tape on a pipe bar clamp the other day so hopefully it will come apart easier next time.

Probably because it gets used so infrequently that you just pick up a new roll when you get the plumbing bits for whatever the project is (and you can't remember where you've stashed the last roll — probably next to the 10mm socket that you can't find.)

I hate that teflon tape, it's not useless, but fittings need to be over packed with the damn stuff, and overtightened - and even then half the time a tiny bead of water appears.
A retired plumber put me on to old school hemp fibre + graphite grease. Happy days, no more overtightening, no more leaks. And the last time we paid for some plumbing work (water heater replacement), guess what he was using? Not teflon tape.
But those o-ringed fittings are the ducks nuts, no other sealing system required.

    No Teflon.

The O-Ring (if you're not STS-51-L) does all the work. I didn't believe it, for the connection inside my concealed cistern in my bathroom rebuild. It rocks, even when tightened up, as per the instructions, "no more than finger tight".

The other (no O-Ring) compression joints throughout the bathroom all required Teflon tape, and all are solid after a mass of wrenching. And praying.

hemp and graphite is ideal for brass on brass etc or untapered stuff.
I don't see anything wrong with belt and braces thread tape on plumbing and neither do the plumbers I have associated with. But I'm just an idiot apparently. I even, shock horror , used some leftover sika in the deck fillers to pipe fittings the other day instead of just relying on the double hose clips.
    what an f wit.

And, Teflon tape can hurt. If a piece gets loose and goes downstream, it can impede or block flow.

No, taping is neither necessary nor recommended. Those rubber bits aren't o-rings exactly (unless your product has a proprietary design) they're more like rubber cones. Meant to compress nicely onto the compression-type supply valves' nipples (3/8" is standard), using tape may compromise how tightly the nuts screw down which can then compromise the rubber gasket's seal.

You should be able to install the supply valve ends' nuts with fingers alone then maybe 1/3 - 1/2 full turn more with a suitable wrench. Anything more means somthing's not lining up properly and may damage that rubber gasket underneath the nut.

With the older style copper supply lines I recommend using some kind of lubricant under and over the brass compression rings used with metallic pipe. Since the lead was taken out of common brass fittings the brass doesn't 'move' as easily when you're tightening connections. Tendency is then to over-tighten, which can lead to cracking the brass ring or the copper pipe underneath. I favor regular pipe dope sealant for this, or even vaseline if that's all you have. Don't need much, just enuf to help the brass compression ring tighten enough to form a seal on the pipe inside.

For ice-maker / water filter plastic waterline connections, do NOT use a brass compression ring! There are plastic rings made for the purpose, that come with brass bushings that go inside the plastic tubing to support it enough so it doesn't distort when the metal compression nut's secured. No need for lube on plastic bushings either, they slide easily enough on the plastic tubing they're to be used on.

Just to add to the noise - teflon tape could hurt, as it won't allow full compression of the rubber gasket.

Just screw it on & tighten it - done.

"Replace the kitchen faucet". Pfffff..... amateur.
In my house if the kitchen faucet needs replacing, my wife just throws a stick of dynamite into the room and blows the whole place to kingdom come and has me do a total remodel.

The same goes for bathrooms which is why I'm always busy around here.

I had a service call to repair a diesel engine "won't start" were the DIY mechanic had used that tape on all the injector, pump and filter connections. I could hardly believe it.
Cost him way over $1000 to repair after that "fix". Rebuilt injectors, and the high pressure pump plus labor to refit.
That stuff should be banned outright.

Thanks to all for the replies. I find it hard to get it through my skull that I don't have to wind that damn stuff around threads to get a seal - doesn't seem natural to me to do any plumbing without a bit more suffering. Sort of like saying you can build a one off boat without any fairing or sanding.

On the range note - I can remember going to one of my great grannies homes in upstate NY at Thanksgiving every year when I was a child and she would serve up a huge meal for about a dozen of us from an old wood burning stove/range in her kitchen. She still heated her place solely with wood as well and though she had electric service, she preferred lighting the place up with kerosene lamps. Folks were better than us back in those days imo. or at least not as soft and complaining. Just did what they had to it seems like, without a blink as to the discomfort. Those days are about gone from society now- everyone complaining about damn near everything and nothing and its a shame .

From upstate PA (Girardvlle) and Germantown: Mom and Aunt Mary made many an enormous meal (coal miners EAT!) on a six-hole Othello with an oven a kid could climb into and a waterback (modern convenience!!) We did have electric iighting but a one-holer out back. Washed behind the stove for baths and were damn sure of where our fannies were!

Never thought I'd get this old.
