    Default A good snow day

My wife and I spent the day Nordic Skiing at a resort up a local canyon. The resort is reporting over 600 inches of snow this season! The cross country ski trails were freshly groomed and provided perfect snow conditions.

The trail network took us down a long downhill section that we had to climb up on the return leg.

These are Quaking Aspen. Cottonwood and Aspen are both members of the Populus genus.

I have seen a few in London, believe it or not. Populas Tremuloides, because the leaves tremble in the wind. The common name in UK is the Hankerchief Tree.

    Thanks.

You should come try the nordic ski trails in Smithers, BC. They have one route that was laid out by M.C. Escher! Always downhill, I swear!

I have always wanted to experience Smithers skiing. I have heard great things about the snow and skiing. A couple of years ago we drove up to Bowron Lakes to complete the canoe circuit. This is a beautiful part of BC, and the rest of the Province has so much to offer!

    Beautiful pics and beautiful trails.
Too much work for me, though. I still prefer downhill skiing.
Plenty of snow for spring skiing.
We do enjoy snowshoeing through our woods.

Another 10" of fresh snow fell last night made great skiing conditions. In the background are strong winds and clouds from another front moving in.

I've still got 8" of snow on my property. Great snowshoeing.
Spring skiing is good but my old bones can't take the stress of pushing all that wet snow around so my
    ski season has ended.

We had about 14" of fine powdery snow last night after I fell asleep. Apparently it all melted before I woke up though, because there wasn't a trace, even on the north side of the house.
I did get a quart of Maple syrup from the trees this year though..... The trees on my sister's property in Vermont. Live Oaks don't make such good syrup.

Great pictures. We have about 3-4 feet of snowpack on the ground. Forecast for about 6” of snow this weekend. The groomed snowmobile trails are in good shape leading up to the Easter weekend. Perfect conditions for riding the trails and ice fishing. Not too cold, hovering a few degrees above freezing. Had a chat with the pastor of our Pentecostal church the other day, Easter is the most important Cristian Holliday but they don’t have a Good Friday service here….? Most people are out to their cabins, snowmobiling and ice fishing for trout on Easter weekend. Late March / early April is prime time for snowmobiling here. Trails are good and not too cold. You are able to get to places you would never access or see any other time unless you have a helicopter.
Stay calm, be brave....wait for the signs. Possibly precariously prevaricating.

Never really had winter here. Just a looong fall.

The photos are awesome! Like Kevin we skipped winter this year. One week of cold right at Christmas, then above average temperatures.

As of this week, the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab is reporting seven hundred-fifteen inches at it's site at Donner summit. That's fifty-nine and a half feet. They had to board up the windows to reinforce them against the pressure from the snow.

Yes, I know! Until recently I was skate skiing. I watched all of the BC Nordic Ski Lab videos religiously and tried to look like the people effortlessly skate skiing in the videos. Unfortunately I recently injured my knee so I am reluctant to try the deep knee bends and lateral push required.

I find the classic nordic technique with occasional herringbone is much easier and more forgiving for older legs. My wife and I will both turn 70 this year and we are trying to stay active and keep shuffling along.

Skate-skiing isn't that bad, not that I can do it. I once helped "squire" several Chinese teenagers around the XC trails on Mount Hollyburn in North Vancouver. They were from Shanghai, and had never seen snow before. Not up close, anyway. One girl never did get it, another girl acquired some skill with the classic style, while the boy saw the skate-skiiers passing us left and right, and managed to get his well-worn rentals to perform remarkably well with the same technique.

Although Paul is claiming that the technique would have people barfing in the bushes, the fact is that no matter how you climbed that hill, in a competition, everyone is barfing in the bushes at the top of the hill. Technique is immaterial, the only difference is the skaters get there first. And that is what competition is all about.

Local Seattle TV weatherman reported that in one weather station in the Wasatch the snow measuring stake is completely covered by about four feet of snow.

Many of our local ski resorts are reporting 870" or greater accumulation, with more expected. We have set records for snow water equivalent. Now we just have to deal with runoff.

Similar in Oregon, but we saw a newscast last night pointing out that Detroit Lake (major reservoir for Salem) is still only at about 10%, despite the rain and snow. It's going to take several years of this to rehydrate the Cascades,

My wife and I spent the day up the canyon where it is still winter. A local resort has recorded over 900" of snow this winter, a new record. As temperatures get warmer we will have flood watches. but so far so good.

Amazing to see the impressions left by the owl's wings.
