    Default When knot to worry?

    Hello all,

Just asking another question, of which I seem to have an endless supply of. So recently I purchased some CVG Douglas Fir and I had a friend helping me pick through pieces and somehow he missed a knot that was barely on the board. I have attached pictures of the knot and I know that at least 1/2 an inch will be taken off that side when it is milled down, will it still be a problem later on? It will be cut down to two 1 1/2" boards to be used as the chines, so a pretty important part. I just want to know if I should try and return the board and get another one, thanks.

Ummmm....no photo showed up. It might be helpful to know what plan you're building to. If the grain around the knot is too wonky you might be able to scarph around it, or try to locate it in a fairly low load point on the chine...if that works.

You mean chine log? The archaic lump of wood inside the hull of an obsolete design?
It may not be as important as you think .If it is , then disappear it with a scarph .
One does not “return boards” .

As Bruce said, rather than worry about it or try to return it simply cut it out and scarph in a solid section

you need to lose the knot and the wonky grain. Cut back to straight grain on either side and scarph it.

You could try to use the wonky grain for knees or such, but yeah you have to cut it out.

I would think that piece would work for the seat riser just as well, if you scarf it you can add 6" and hide it under the seat.

I took everyone's advice and went ahead and purchased a new board, this board will end up being used for smaller pieces of the boat and thus the knot can be cut out. I do have a question regarding a piece of two inch thick fir I have that has an extremely small knot in it that does not go all the way through. Is this something that I could drill out and epoxy in a plug?

well, if you buy 1st rate boatbuilding timber and the supplier knows what its intended for and you've asked for as much then anything NOT free of heart sap and defect can and ought to be returned.
