    I would think it would be OK as long as you are moving it forward on the yard. Moving it aft would probably kill your luff tension on a balanced lug. Whether it is convenient to re-tie the halyard bend or whatever knot you are using in those conditions is another question. Coming up with some sort of cleat on the yard that would do the job of temporarily moving the halyard's lift point without having to untie and re-tie the halyard might be worth experimenting with.

    Thanks. That's great to know.

    Probably If I just attached my haylard to the yard with a topsail halyard bend I wouldn't be fussing with this problem.

    But I have this bronze loop metal mast traveller with a hook. I seem to be intent on using it to date. The yard has a loop of rope. So happily I wouldn't be untying/retying anything I would just be adding another loop attachment point on the yard, farther forward about 8" So I'd have 2
