Default Started my build blog of a 5m Setka Transatlantic sailboat, in English

Hi Everyone, I have started the build blog of my 5m Janusz Maderski designed Setka A, A boat that has done 16 transatlantic crossings in the Setka Atlantic Challenge, a competition from Portugal to Canary Islands to Martinique. A solo transat race - there was also a 2 crew option but that has been dropped and it is now a SOLO only race. The next race starts in 2025, My boat is being constructed in the Azores Islands Portugal, and is aiming to be a cost effective simple boat build.

    please take a look at
    https://setkacagarro.blogspot.com/

I hope you will visit and also leave comments here or on the blog, If there is enough interest I will also post updates here on the forum - lets have a dialogue - the only thing better than building and sailing boats is talking about them

    have an excellent day
    regards
    Nath

The building plans are in Polish but have English translations on the plans, the Designer Janusz Maderski answers emails in English and is very helpful.

Thank you for posting a reply on the thread, I will keep the thread going, maybe posting some pics here as well, the blog will be updated daily, at the moment there are a lot of the same things happening, one frame looks like another frame, luckily there are only six frames, then it will get interesting, I am going to be making all the hatches, all the rigging is going to be dyneema D-F20, a dyneema type with no creep, through low friction rings, sails will be hanked on with dyneema soft shackles, so it should get really interesting and have lots of opportunity for constructive chats and crticism

It should be a very interesting vessel.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

We have grandparents from Pico and Sao Jorge. The Setka is one of my favorite small boats.

This will be fun to watch. Keep grinding!

That's a great video and great interview - really interesting to see this boat in action and to hear about its capabilities from this young guy.

As an aside, I've been following Johan who is doing the interview, along with his wife and young daughter from "RAN sailing", as they start a new build of their own and these guys are really enjoyable and pleasant to follow. No pretences or "click bait" just a really nice young family living the dream and Johan, as a carpenter, shows what it means to do everything properly and precisely from the start.

Keep grinding! You’re making excellent progress.

I’m going to see all the old people tomorrow, and I’ll find out for sure exactly where on each island they came from. It would be neat if you’ve visited any of the places my family came from.

Apparently some of our family came from Santo Antao. The only other relatives I spoke to came from Terceira. These are my wife’s grandparents and greats.

My own family is estranged, but come from somewhere on Pico.

It’s just lovely over there, and someplace I’d love to see IRL. We’ve seen lots of photos.

Sao Jorge is a truly magical place, very steep roads, with fajas that are great places to visit, Santa antao is in Calheta? - we have visited once with a friend from Porto, and did a whirlwind tour of all the tourist sites, Then I have raced to sao jorge on our yearly Horta Velas Horta race, the marina at Velas has cliffs and the cagarros circle the whole night calling, sleep is very difficult
    I have a instagram page

if you google #28degreeswest you can find pictures and us on instagram, Next time I am in Sao Jorge I will make an effort to see santa antao - pico is also brilliant and all 3 islands Faial Pico and sao jorge are a short ferry trip away

To be fair and honest, it’s getting harder to talk to the old folks about stuff because their minds are slipping, and with it their English. Haha. Unfortunately, neither of us have very good Portuguese, so it’s hard sometime to communicate, even with technology to translate. And, the good English speakers are old and deaf, too. Either way, it’s been fun listening to tales of the islands.

I’ll set aside some time to go dig deeper into the family history and get more information. Maybe even some photos! Somewhere there is a photo of the sailboat they came over here on.

Sorry to drift your thread with talk of the islands and ancestors.

The Setka is looking great. The keel and bulb look wonderful!

no problem with thread drift, it will always come back to the build, Every day the blog gets updated, so there will be an update here too, Its good you get all their memories and info now, even if you have to record it on a app and save it for later translation,
