    Default Sitting in the hospital

I’m Houston unexpectedly. I think my father in law will not make it. Constant seizures. They cannot sedate him until they stop. Been going on since yesterday morning. Going to be a long night. This sucks for everyone.

Tom, I've been through those long ICU / ER nights - take care of yourself, so you can be there for him. Hoping for the best,

Glad that you’re there with him. I hope the attending doctors can pull a miracle and help him get better somehow.

    Thanks all.

None of the seizure meds worked. Possible post surgical infection from a benign mass removal last year. Performed another surgery this afternoon. Analyzing to see what it is and how to treat. Induced coma. At least they have a treatment avenue to pursue and he is sedated.

The good news-he is being moved from the ICU today. And a full recovery is possible with some rehab and patience.

Pretty amazing care though. 14 medical staff at the room for rounds each morning. It’s interesting to observe medical disagreements between neurologists and neurosurgeons. The neurologists are in charge and view the neurosurgeons as mechanics.

Thanks for the good thoughts. As predicted, this long in the ICU was miserable for everyone.

That was quite a spell in the ICU, glad the hear he is getting out and has prospects of full recovery. It is not a fun place to spend time.

Learned about ICU delirium. Apparently being woken up every hour 24/7 isn’t great for your mental health.

WOW! Glad to hear the good news!

Among all these fiercely competitive doctors, it makes me happy that this guy won the Nobel prize. He seems like someone I’d have a drink with.

I think he gets all the cred in the staff meetings. “Your a neurologist? Nice. Have you won the Nobel prize?”

I hope he got a primo parking spot.

My #2 son spent a week in hospital with severe abdominal pain and nausea, that might or might not have been appendicitis. It was interesting to see the disagreements between the gastroenterologists, the surgeons and the radiologists. Pretty clear that some people thought one party was a bunch of meatcutters, and they thought the other parties were a bunch of hacks.

The surgeons were right in the end: it was appendicitis. Hadn't ruptured, but it was perforated and had been leaking. A week in hospital, 2 weeks at home on IV antibiotics and right as rain.

    <snark>

And only $127,000 [1] in this, the best healthcare system [2] in the world. We've still got a couple of boxes of the very expensive blue nitrile gloves they gave us for use during the at-home portion of the party.

[1] We were only out $1,200 or so, plus or minus. Because we've got good health insurance.

[2] For certain definitions of "best".
