    Default State of the Union

Anyone watching the State of the Union address? Biden is hitting all the right notes.

He calls to "Ban assault weapons now!" and the camera shows Boebert sitting in her chair like she just smelled a fart.

Not watching because I have a house guest who, while he doesn't like Trump, he hates every Democrat in Government. I'm taping it and will watch tomorrow after the leave.

There was a lot of shouting of the type that was once condemned, especially when it was thrown at Obama. There was a lack of decorum and the press is commenting on it now.

Romney snubs Santos in the opening shots. We'll have to see if words from that short footage come out.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is giving the Republican rebuttal. That's scraping the bottom of the barrel!

I turned the TV off after hearing Huckabee's first three sentences. It's hard for democracy to succeed with bald faced liars having a national pulpit.

Biden's speech reminded how good of a president he has been, especially given what he inherited from the former guy, who made a fetish out of dividing the country and accomplishing nothing except giving giant tax cuts to corporations and the rich.

Last evening the congressional GQP effectively demonstrated to all reasonable Americans that they are a shameless, howling, anarchic mob.

This is now the face of the Republican Party:

Nonsense. Except for the unfortunate, and already well known and more or less accepted (rolleyes) stutter—he nailed it. He was addressing a large chamber of people in person, and the country in general on TV, and his speech was powerful, especially if one paid attention to the actual content. (Frankly, it would have been dumb and rude and un-natural for him to have stared into the camera, speaking over those present, while delivering that speech. IMO)

The SOTU is strong. People need to be told, and he told us. (Can you believe that sixty-some percent of people polled think Biden hasn't accomplished much. It took most of two hours to list all that he has.) Some of us already knew. The alternate hominids in fancy clothes in the chamber were clueless about the content where they weren't frothily agitated and visibly miffed and petulant. There was actually only one point he made (which somehow got past me), in the last quarter of it, where the Rs felt like they had to perk up to object, belying the truth that they actually don't believe their own BS. 'Yeah, but this one is real! Bark, bark, bark and howl'). And then they devolved from there. If you weren't looking for the divide when the camera panned the room, you might not notice the far side sitting quietly, knowing they have nothing, but smirking about it while everyone else (Ds of course, sounding like the whole, healthy population) stood and cheered and smiled like they, we, are winning. Which we are. Thanks to Biden.

How obvious all that was, it's amazing to me that Huckabee Sanders had the stones to stand up and try to sell the Rs empty and threadbare suit. They got nothing. And of course they can't revert on SS and Medicare or the debt ceiling now, but also of course the hominid aRs, the hardcore magas, will try to pressure McCarthy and be very public about the debt ceiling and et lame cetera.

Biden was cheerful, serious, powerful, and HAMMERED home the indisputable facts of his accomplishments—unless he was lying like a rug, and he wasn't, how do you dispute the jobs stats, the low inflation, and all the rest of of the factual litany of positive results of his administration?—following with the hopeful and energetic sales pitch to 'finish the job.' Ironically, all of those things taken together are actually making America great again. And it burns the Rs, like the Wicked Witch of the West melting in the mop water spilled by Toto. Oh, dear.

I will confess that neither of us could listen to Sarah, and we agreed not to try.

On the positive side, after the rousing speech it was too late to watch more of Costner be the head of a corrupt and selfish, lying, evil northwest ranching dynasty of way way too much white, plaid-wearing, ruggedly individual, sh!t-kicking cowboy-ness. And take that big stupid hat off in the house, in church, for god's sake, at the dinner table, and in bed while doing the nasty, FFS. Hat off. How hard is that, ma'am?

    Don't get me started.

    Oops.

Fully agree. Repugs showed the nation in prime time what they amount to, with MTG's white fur collar serving nicely as punctuation.

But she said that Biden inherited the fastest growing economy in the history of the country?! Surely any Biden success is due to Trump?!

I can’t stand normal political speeches, especially the presidential ones where our special status in the world is blessed by God and looked up to by the world. oops, we meant well. Just makes me gag. But it sounds like it went well so that’s a relief.

I get that, and I agree, however it isn't a bad set of ideals to which to aspire. Especially if couched as part of an even broader statement of having all that work to be geopolitically inclusive. Yay, alliance for support of Ukraine, boo autocrats, for instance. It's the good fight to fight, if we aren't using it only as a rhetorical masquerade for the alternative, like the forty years previous.

I’m not talking about ideals. I’m talking about the public masturbation of a national ego. There’s a lot more admirable ways to engender common purpose or identity. It doesn’t express strength or wisdom any more than TFG’s bragging does.

This is what right wing sources tell their audience. It's not true, but we accept it as 'free speech' rather than treating it as fraud.

I personally think this was among the best State of the Union speeches I can remember.

Are there not some things for which Biden actually has the right to brag?

I did enjoy Joe getting the Republicans to commit, on National TV, to NOT cutting Medicare and Social Security.

He seemed to enjoy that, as well.

Recognize - the original bill, capping insulin costs at $35/month, applied to everyone. The Republicans put the kabosh on that.

He has the right to say nearly anything. I am speaking of the bragging that the US holds a special place for others in the world to look up to with God giving us a wink and thumbs up.
