Default Is cedar elm carpy firewood?

The interwebs tell me elm is a poor firewood. Not sure cedar elm is just an elm or something else.

Does anyone know? Big ice storm, there’s lots to be had.

I have only burned branches from it, but I would expect it to make good firewood. It is closely related to Rock elm and a very hard wood. But it would be hard to split because of the interlocked grain.

It's not in the same class as oak, hickory, or maple, but it will be fine as firewood. It's get a reputation for not popping and sparking, too.

And free elm makes an especially fine firewood.

Cedar Elm (U cassifolia) has a reputation for having interlocked grain. That'll make it difficult to split, so get it cut and split while it's still green.

Just for comparison (density having a certain relationship to quality as a firewood). . . . dried, U. crassifolia runs about 41 lbs/cubic foot. White oak and hickory maybe 47-50 lbs/cubic foot. Apple (and excellent firewood) runs about 52 lbs per cubic foot.
