    Default Old Folks Rule!

Bonnie Raitt, 75. Grammy song of the year.

Her song “Just Like That” had three Grammy nominations and snapped up two
wins, for Best American Roots Song and Song of the Year. She snatched the prize for the latter from under the noses of fellow nominees including Beyoncé, Adele, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

Bonnie has won 23 Grammys including Album of the Year for Nick of Time and a Lifetime Achievement Award. She was ranked number 50 in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", and was placed on the magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". In 2000, Raitt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She has also received the Icon Award from the Billboard Women in Music Awards. There are also a number of old Blues musicians that she has bought tombstones for. Bonnie rules!

She has made a lot of people love her.

She is one of those performers that I think is very good, but just not my cup of tea.

That said, I could not be happier for her! She leaves the other 4 in the dust!

Bonnie is great. While the last time I saw her was enough to make me say I won't again (I guess everyone can have an off night, but it was a bit much), I've seen her at least 10 times. The lady can play some slide & I'm now seeing acoustic as well.

Back in the late 60's/early 70's a friend lived in a big old place in Berlin with many of the folks who later formed Little Feat, Bonnie, and some other musicians. He has some great stories & I'm sure everyone would be shocked to hear that they all knew how to party.

I don't see the appeal of Swift. I do like music that has something to say and I find her music is just more teenage angst. I realize that she sells a lot of recordings, but that isn't the measure of the music.

This is a significant bit of thread drift, but sticking with the Grammys - did anyone else see the Smith/Petras performance?

I must admit that I saw it and I had a WTF? response. I thought it was disgusting and far from humorous despite Petras' glowing smile. The brief article skips over the dozen or so dancing devils that seemed to be worshiping Smith in his horned costume.

Sam Smith & Kim Petras‘ ‘Unholy’ Grammys Performance Deemed ‘Satanic’ & ‘Evil’ by Conservatives

As if people weren’t mad enough at the results of the 2023 Grammys, now conservatives are fired up over two performers wearing devil costumes during the annual telecast. During the ceremony on Sunday (Feb. 5), Sam Smith and Kim Petras offered a rousing performance of their hit single “Unholy,” in which Petras performed alongside drag stars Violet Chachki and Gottmik dressed in devil costumes, while Smith was in a bright red top hat with devil horns sticking out from it for the final chorus.

Actually, I don't. I have no idea what you're talking about.

And I don't think it's just conservatives that are offended. I was and I vote Democrat. At the very least, it mocked the beliefs of others.

Try thinking of it this way. Petras is transgendered. Would we be laughing if the song and dance were mocking transgendered people? If not, then why is it okay to mock people of faith? It was in very bad taste.

who did the smith/petras performance itself mock?

i'm only mocking conservatives whose heads exploded over a bit of pop culture
my feeling on the taste or distastefullness of such is that if you don't like it, don't watch it

I can't say I'm much of a fan of Gaga, but without looking closely at her performances I'll write this off as nothing more than the off target condemnation of The Beatles when they first appeared.

I'm not interested in appeasing conservatives who want to be the guardian of decency, but some things really are beyond the pail.

I'll agree with part of that. I have no interest in anything they will record in the future because I now know that their game is using shock to get attention. That wears thin and is a fairly good indicator that they have nothing to offer.

Taylor Swift did win a Grammy for Best Music Video for the same song that didn't win Song of the Year. Taylor isn't trying to sell music to the grumpy old men demographic, but she is very good at appealing to her audience. She is also stunningly beautiful.

If you want a laugh, go to Google and there is about a 2-minute sequence where she is trying to go toe-to-toe with John Cleese on Graham Norton. She reminds me of a deer caught in the headlights and that's what I think of whenever I see her interviewed. She writes vapid pop and she does it very well, but I honestly believe there is no there there.

Took a bit to find a video of the performance. I don't see any "mocking" going on. Take a look at the lyrics, it is about the hypocrisy of so many "good christian men" who go off and have secret affairs while condemning "immoral" behavior in others. Catchy tune too, probably going to be my earworm for the next day or two.

Pinetop Perkins is the oldest person to win a Grammy. In 2011 he was awarded with Best Traditional Blues Album for Joined at the Hip, at 97 years of age.

The Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album was won by Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder, they are 80 and 75 years old. Buddy Guy who is 80 was also nominated in that category.

    Default Old Folks Rule!

Its a good story that is heartwarming, but also hits thought and emotion in several other ways. Bonnies playing and singing are great, technically expert and emotive, and yet, her performance doesnt get in the way of the lyrics.

    I like it.

i like bonnie of course, and the song is ok.

lots of singer-songwriters of similar genre doing more interesting and vital work. sarah jarosz, gillian welch, sharon van etten, alduous harding....

a grammy for bonnie feels like a make up call, and i don't know for what.

I have and like Sarah Jarosz' last album. It got 2 nominations for Grammys, but was released in 2020 so wasn't eligible again. Gillian Welch's last album won the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. It wasn't eligible again. Van Etten did release an album in 2022, but it wasn't nominated for a Grammy. The same can be said for Aldous Harding.

I have read the lyrics for all the songs nominated for best song with Bonnie and agree with hers being the best.

I love Bonnie Raitt and saw her in Sonoma maybe 10 years ago. I am also a big fan of the Tedeschi/Trucks Band - her voice is amazing and he played with the Allman Brothers, a Great guitarist - check them out!

Susan & Derek (Tedeschi, Trucks respectively) are a wonderful story. Not only are both amazing musicians, their marriage & later band formation has produced some wonderful music. Also, they live down the road from & sometimes play with Dave Matthews - doing some great stuff together.

Since this is a Bonnie thread, I have to tell a story.

In the 70's I worked as a bartender in Burlington VT at a place that had really good music - local & medium level - medium like Leon Russel, Utah Phillips, Mary McCaslin, and others.

There was a great local band playing (a couple of members ended up in Nashville as session musicians) doing Chicago blues & some of their own stuff. It was busy & I heard a woman's voice say "Could I have a double Jack please?". I turned & it was Bonnie, who had played a show in town that night. I gave it to her, and a few minutes later she asked for another. When i delivered it, she said "These guys are good!". I agreed & pointed to the packed bar "They always fill the house". She said "Think they'd let me sit in for a set?" (they had one more to play) & I said "I'm sure they would - let me go talk to Zoot, the lead singer/guitarist". When they took a break, I went out back to the (not tobacco) smoke filled break room & said "Hey Zoot - someone wants to sit in for the next set." He looked at me and said "Who?". "Not telling you, but you'll be OK with it" I replied. He gave me a dubious look & I sad "If you're not OK, drinks for the whole band are on me next time you play". He thought for a sec & said "OK, if you're that sure."

I went back to the bar, gave her a thumbs up, she grinned, pointed at her empty glass & said "I'll go get my guitar". Needless to say, it was full when she got back. The band came back out on stage & Zoot said "OK, there's someone out there who is gonna sit in for the next set. Don't know who you are, but c'mon up!". As Bonnie stepped around the bar & started walking towards the stage, Zoot picked his jaw up off the floor & said "OK Garret, you don't need to buy drinks next time".

She played the whole set with them & it was fantastic. I'm no musician, but it's magic to me how talented people can slot in together & play as if they'd been doing it for years.

Great story Garret. I’ve been watching (listening) to a lot of Bonnie Raitt YouTube’s today. I’ve always liked her. She did a lot of duets with others that are really great to listen to. Ray Charles, Linda Ronstadt, Norah Jones, Bruce Hornsby, on and on. Her ability to blend and fill, as well as do spot on solos, is well worth checking out.
