    Question Mahogany swim platform?

Need to rebuild a swim platform. Old one was cypress and always oiled. But never liked the look up against a mahogany transom.

Would like to build the new one out of mahogany/sapele but I know that varnished it is going to be to slick. Anyone stained one and then just oiled it? Would that work and hold up as long as it is oiled regular?

Keeping a finish on a swim platform will be a consuming hobby.
There’s a nice tan shade of King Starboard.

Thanks but I refuse to use plastic on a wooden boat.

    Well, what about plastic finishes?
Would you consider coating in a two-pack clear finish with non skid mixed in?
There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Are dacron, aka polyester terephthate, boat skins OK?

I oiled the swim step on Skookum Maru using many coats of Deks Olje #1 a few summers back. It looked fantastic.

It was perfect. Absolutely gorgeous. Great non-skid too. And it lasted about five minutes. If I had been dedicated enough to re-oil it every couple of weeks I'm sure it would still look that good today but I don't have that sort of patience. It has since faded back to a nice weathered look and it will stay that way.

What does that have to do with swim platforms?

Have you considered making it non-slip by routing shallow grooves in the face of the boards?
Then keeping up with the oil to keep it looking nice.

Plastic is OK for your boat skins, but unthinkable for a swim platform?

Bronze would be nice. A little less costly would be one of the popular home decking materials. I used Ipe at my home. It has no finish whatsoever. It doesn't stay brown, it fades to a nice grey.
