I originally went up to LA to shoot some street photography and there were plenty of ingenuine actress wannabes looking to attract the male gaze. I just don't have the heart to shoot people up close without their permission.

LA is definitely not my thing.

But I'm glad it suits you, Joe.

I'm more interested in something like this:

Actually to be honest I HATE LA - I'm trying to expand my photography horizons and I thought a city scene might be fun.
I do like the Porto 400 film type and I'm trying to get that full LA vibe.

Although I probably would have preferred to shoot in NYC in April I know that city so much better.

If I had to pick a city to love, Istanbul might be the one. (But not with Turkey's current politics).

I’ve only been here a few days but I’d have to put Singapore pretty high on my list.

Hey, Joe, in the first photo in post # 3, I am seeing a small circle on the right edge of the building - 3 floors below the top. I am definitely not a photographer, and have no idea what it could be. . . Your thoughts ?

Wow, you guys are really looking at the photos That particular photo would not upload because of file size so I just made a smaller screen shot of the image on my iPad and post it here. What your seeing is the iPad Magic Keyboards cursor as I was editing and selecting that photo. Too funnny I didn't even notice it.

Thats kinda the feeling I wanted, and more importantly it's that feeling I get when I go there. It's always spread out, desolate with stark buildings and few people on melrose mid afternoon on Friday.

It's the LA of Diane Arbus or Michael Mann's movie Collateral, only instead of night it's in stark, bleak daylight.

FWIW the pink building is actually the high end clothing store Paul Smith, but it totally looked like a stark strip club to me, and thats what caught my attention the similarity between high fashion and a stark strip club.

Don't forget Jamie Fox, was awesome. Yea but the terminator quality of Cruise's stiff arm running style is pretty intense. It was satisfying when he took care of the thugs in the ally.

Also FWIW if I was to ever go back and shoot LA, unless I'm on Sunset down by the Chinese theater and all the crazy people and tourist where B&W street portrait photography would work. Other that that one location the rest of LA needs to be shot in Kodak Portra 400 only

As kid I associated LA with my grandmother and old stories because we visited her a few times a year. Otherwise it was one big region of malls and suburbs sliced up by four lane roads and freeways. When visiting PapaGrande would often have a visitor we called The Countess who would come over to speak German with him. I think she used to be a minor actress in her youth. Don’t recall what country she was from.

    Nice photos, Joe.
When I was a waiter and people would ask me to take a photo of their party, I would always flip the camera around and take a couple of candid shots of my mug before I fliped it back around and take the photo they want I always wonder what they thought when they scrolled through their photos later

Can't answer for Joe, but this practice is more common than you might think. It is usually a case of:

    A. Protecting Artwork from damage from camera flashes.
    B. Copyright violation.
    C. Distraction of other visitors./ Disruption of Work

The Sistine Chapel, Westminster Abby, Taj Mahal, The Eiffel Tower, are all examples.

I used to have an office in the Chanin Building, NYC. It was forbidden for me to take pictures in the lobby. The place is an orgy of Art Deco bronze art. The rule there was part monetary--the building management could command a higher price from camera and film crews wanting the site as a shoot. And, its a working office building, so tourists congregating and snapping selfies gets in the way of normal business.
