How about some pictures.
How about some pictures.
De-icing in Istanbul. Or how to turn a 9-1/2 hour flight into a 12 hour flight. Right after getting off a 10 hour flight. What’re the chances of getting caught in a snowstorm during your 1-1/2 hour layover?

Must’ve been a spectacular view from the cockpit:

Freezing rain for me here now.. heading into the twenties (yes, miswesterners, you have it colder.. 0-: ), dog went to the door - I opened it, she stepped forward, and instant brakes! she looked out side, looked at me, wagged her tail, looked outside, looked at me.. her bladder won, she went outside - and back 5 min later.
looks like where y'all were was much more pleasant!
but 12 hrs on a plane, this post a 10 hr flight? it's ALL yours!
i don't envy the flight, but i do envy the globetrotting.
musical interlude:
"Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul..."
They Might Be Giants!
The flights were pretty bad. The food and service were ok. Just so much time sitting in a cramped space.
Fa Fabulous pictures, thanks so much.
Touristing is exhausting!
There is so much to see here in Singapore. Yesterday we went to the Botanic Gardens. A ten minute walk and four subway stops later and there we were. The gardens were gorgeous, it’s interesting to see so many plants that you’ve never seen before. And we saw a Clouded Monitor Lizard! I’ve certainly never stumbled upon one of those rooting around in the leaves for their lunch.
It’s hot here, highs in the upper 80s, overnight lows in the mid 70s. It’s rained every day, just for a couple of hours but torrential. The Hawker Food Center culture is fantastic - we’re exploring that every day.
Our lizard friend, about 2-1/2 or 3 feet long:

And of course we stumbled upon a wooden boat:

Those are traditional woven fish traps.
And here is a paddle carved in the 1940s:

Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
I once thought I was wrong, but I was wrong, I wasn't wrong.
This place looks fantastic! I wonder what it would be like to live here?
is it always so cloudy?
i couldn't possibly live in a place with such persistent cloud cover.
How does one tout?
I’ve spent a lot of time in S’pore, all business but many weekends left to my own devices. Yup, it’s far away … 29 hrs door to door from Portland Int’l Jetpirt.
Great pic of the “cruise ship” hotel & casino in the background.
Did you buy your wife a gold plated orchid?
Hope you had a chance to have some pepper crab!
cheers,
Great trip Steven! I was just with a colleague from Singapore two weeks ago….your pics and his description makes me want to go!
We managed to meet up with James at one of Singapore’s Hawker markets. These food centers are fantastic with amazing food from around the region available in small stalls at great prices.

We are now in Thailand for a few days. It’s a two hour flight to Phuket from Singapore then a crazy hour long taxi ride to our hotel. Driving in Thailand sure is an adventure. But so worth it.

We are off to town in a few minutes, another adventure.

Thanks for the photos!
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.
