Default Megyn Kelly is a fool

Wasn't she on Fox News once upon a time?

‘Get a Real MD’: Megyn Kelly Bashes ‘Wannabe’ Jill Biden For Getting Called a ‘Doctor’ at Football Game

SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly was displeased with how First Lady Jill Biden was referred to by her academic title while attending the NFC championship game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers.

As a Philadelphia native, Mrs. Biden is a known fan of sports teams from the area, and she sat with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at the Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday to watch the Eagles trounce the 49ers 31 to 7. The win means the Eagles are going to the Super Bowl, and the first lady celebrated the game on Twitter.

During Biden’s attendance, her presence was called out by games announcers on TV, who referred to her as a “doctor.” This refers to the fact that Mrs. Biden is a teacher with two masters degrees and a doctorate in education.

This rubbed Kelly the wrong way, and she took her objections to Twitter.

“Announcers for this Eagles-49ers game just spotted the First Lady in a box and of course call her ‘Dr. Jill Biden,” Kelly wrote. “Wonder if she realizes what a wannabe she looks like insisting on this fake title. Get a real MD or just work on your self-esteem.”

While Kelly was accusing the first lady of using her title to boost her own profile, her tweet drew a negative reaction from those who accused her of selective nitpicking.
Not that it matters, but originally "doctors" were Doctorates of Philosophy as were all the sciences. One by one, they split away to form their own disciplines.

A doctor as in a PhD needs to perform original research to earn the title. This includes a Doctorate of Education. Medical doctors do not, although medical researchers are often doctors with doctorates. In truth, medical doctors are Master's Degrees. I say that not to offend any doctors here. It's just a simple fact.

I hadn't heard that; always referred to as 'doctor of medicine'. But there's always been a bit of a kerfuffle about titles, with PhD's considering themselves the only 'real doctors'.

I agree on all counts. It only becomes interesting when someone like Kelly combines ignorance with opinionated and has a microphone to share it with the world.

Having been around academia for decades, I have learned that it is unusual to introduce a non-medical doctor by referring to them as "Doctor". In many instances it is seen as a little pompous.

In early 2009, Los Angeles Times opinion columnist Robin Abcarian noticed that campaign news releases and subsequent White House announcements persistently referred to her as “Dr. Jill Biden.” She asked fellow journalists and academics to weigh in.
Responses ranged from dismissive to disapproval. Abcarian wrote that Joel Goldstein, a professor at St. Louis University School of Law, appeared to be “mildly amused upon hearing that Biden liked to be called Dr.” Time magazine writer Amy Sullivan opined, “Ordinarily, when someone goes by doctor and they are a PhD, not an MD, I find it a little bit obnoxious.” Washington Post desk chief Bill Walsh observed that “if you can’t heal the sick, we don’t call you doctor.”
    https://www.jamesgmartin.center/2021...or-nondoctors/

Insisting on being called “Doctor” when you don’t heal people is, among most holders of doctorates, seen as a gauche, silly, cringey ego trip. Consider “Dr.” Jill Biden, who doesn’t even hold a Ph.D. but rather a lesser Ed.D., something of a joke in the academic world. President-elect Joe Biden once explained that his wife sought the degree purely for status reasons: “She said, ‘I was so sick of the mail coming to Sen. and Mrs. Biden. I wanted to get mail addressed to Dr. and Sen. Biden.’ That’s the real reason she got her doctorate,” Joe Biden has said.

Mrs. Biden wanted the credential for its own sake. As for its quality, well. She got it from the University of Delaware, whose ties to her husband, its most illustrious alumnus if you don’t count Joe Flacco, run so deep that it has a school of public policy named after him. That the University of Delaware would have rejected her 2006 dissertation as sloppy, poorly written, non-academic, and barely fit for a middle-school Social Studies classroom (all of which it is) when her husband had been representing its state in the U.S. Senate for more than three decades was about as likely as Tom Hagen telling Vito Corleone that his wife is a fat sow on payday. The only risk to the University of Delaware was that it might strain its collective wrist in its rush to rubber-stamp her doctoral paper. Mrs. Biden could have turned in a quarter-a**ed excuse for a magazine article written at the level of Simple English Wikipedia and been heartily congratulated by the university for her towering mastery. Which is exactly what happened.

Never met Megyn Kelly but she certainly is wrong.

Our town's superintendent of schools is often announced as Dr So-and-So when he is acting in his official capacity. Never heard anybody wondering if he was an MD.
I work for an engineering company and a doctorate in engineering is highly prized and respected (at least here). If introduced to someone unknown, in an official capacity, they might be introduced as Dr So-and-So. Nobody here thinks they're MDs.
A long time ago, another lifetime ago it seems, I was a contractor for the NIST labs in Washington where there were some scientists that need my occasional manual labor (definitely not my brains ). Sometimes the scientist were introduced as Dr So-and-So. It never occurred to me that they were MDs.

Sure, persons bragging about there doctorate at parties is just a twit, but the ones I know are quite regular persons (well, except for the intimidatingly large brains).

This is really the point. My colleagues never call me "Dr" or "Prof" and people would think they're nuts if they did (because everyone is a Dr or working to become one) and the people that get the real attention (and I mean a lot of it) are the high school and undergraduate students I sometimes bring to a meeting to present their work. That makes them stand out in a very positive way.

However, away from work, I hear it when HS teachers introduce me to their students mostly for their benefit. Also, my mother used to address her letters using "Dr", but it made her feel good.

However, a "news reporter" insulting someone with a Doctor of Education degree is really not acceptable.

During a segment on “Megyn Kelly Today,” she said, “But what is racist? Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character.”

My dentist always calls me professor, so I make sure to call him doctor. I think it's a game he started. Everyone else just calls me "Chuck". Plus, I have a thing about p1ss1ng off people who put sharp metal objects in my mouth.

Context is everything. I don't see the point in calling a medical doctor "doctor" out on the golf course, but I will show the utmost respect to a plumber who comes to my house to fix a problem.

Then again, if a math or physics professor is shooting a particularly bad game of pool, there is a certain pleasure in asking, "You want to check those angles, professor?" A title need not always indicate respect.

I am amused with chiropractors insisting on the title of doctor. I am amused by the MDs use the title when it has nothing to do with the situation, the docs who sign letters to the editor (or to Woodenboat) and sign the letter "MD" The legal profession went from issuing LLBs to JDs decades ago. So lawyers are doctors, but I have yet to run across an attorney using "Dr." because he or she graduated from law school. The pretentious lawyers sign their names Esq and that's bad enough

That matches my experience as well. In K-12 education--public and private--people with PhD degrees (principals, superintendents, etc.) generally are referred to as "Dr. ______" in official situations. It's not pretentious. It's formal, and respectful of the experience and training the person has. There's a time and place for formality.

We always referred to our profs in college as DR. if they had a PHD. Its a simple term of respect. I find painfully pretentious when Dr.s of any sort insist on being being referred to as Dr. outside the confines of their profession.

Yes, Megyn Kelly is rendered moronic by her political ideology. She is one of a multitude.

Dad remained a Pan American pilot after getting his PhD. Since he did not hold a teaching or research job, he did not ask to be addressed as "Doctor McColgin". A neighbor and family mentor, the ornithologist Dr. Robert Cushman Murphy, would address each other at Christmas parties as "Doctoor" and teasingly address a physician at the party as "Dokka" as he had a mere professional degree, no research. All in good Christmas spirit.

Don't know if it's still true but in England when I was a kid a male physician was addressed as "Mister". Meanwhile, in much of continental Europe an attorney with a JD was addressed as "Doctor", which is unthinkable here.

A friend with both a PhD and an MD, considered the former the more 'rigorous' discipline. Says a lot about him - he's a neurosurgeon.

Some folks get a bit 'bent' over all this. Esp. in a small town, everyone addresses you as 'doctor' (and they might like a curbside consult, as well). 'A few' would make a point of addressing as 'mister', intending it an insult. Ya gotta look at the agenda's.

Personally, I liked being 'mister' when not working - but the only option was to go out of town, where no one knew me. Other folks really wish to be, always, addressed as Dr. YMMV
