Default About As American As It Gets

About as American as it comes. The inventor, natch, was from Texas.

    US Patent # 269,766 — Animal Trap:

And of course, this being America, somebody built one.

Some farmers here years ago used to strap old shotguns vertically over holes in a fence to kill wombats. Apart from making very large holes under fences letting wildlife in and sheep out- and being hard to deter from established trails- wombats also dig burrows in paddocks which can result in injury to livestock, vehicles becoming stuck or damaged, and horse riders face planting into the dirt. When the grandfather of a school friend of mine first took over an established farm, he found the metal parts of three old guns hanging on fences, the stocks rotted away. Those guns must have been put there back when the country was first fenced for that to happen. JayInOz

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Spring guns, anti poachers, rather than vermin. I have just learned that they were anti Resurrection Men.

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

A documentary called "Wildcat", filmed in Peru, at one point showed this kind of "trap" used by locals to kill jungle animals. Quite a good movie for several reasons, including the impact the gun/trap had on wildlife.

    Two thoughts:
You would sure know when to reset it.
You sure wouldn't want to accidentally set it off while baiting it.
