    Default Speaking of Canada...

is there any problem driving between the US and Canada right now? We have our passports and vaccination cards, and I was hoping to get up into New Brunswick again on our next 'long' trip up north.

We have only done this once, but made a trip up to St. Andrews years ago and my wife has fond memories. I'd like to drive up once more and see the place again.

    Thank you,

Don't know if this is a national issue, but the border with Ontario is as open as it ever was, for both cars and boats. The need for vaccination proof, Canpass, etc. was dropped a couple of months ago. Canada did institute a ban on property sales to Americans, though.

When I went last summer I scanned and sent them a copy of my passport and used the ArriveCan app on my phone to notify them of when and where I was crossing.
I think you can do it without now. The Canadians at the port of entry I planned to use were quite helpful when I called them beforehand.
    Bon voyage!

The border is now fully opened. No need for anything relating to Covid. No tests before coming to the border, no tests at the border, and no random tests after you cross into Canada.

Speaking as an American, I say, Americans, STFU. Canada is . . .

I once caught a fish in Canada. It leapt
It flung itself, it threw spray
against a mass of green forest
    In the sun
    and way big granite mountains
Big, I say; in an icy breeze
    where the moose lives
    the moose!
    where the bear lives
    the bear!
F yeah. Feel that bear. He's here.
In that moment, til now, I have loved her
I've loved her ever since. In my heart, from now
    From here to the arctic
    and back again
because I knew she was part of me
All of it is, F the names! Part of me . . .
    Seriously.
    On the most intimate terms,
even if I didn't know til then --
I do now. Now I do. I know it now. For sure.
I don't know what else to say. Feel that breeze, feel that sun
    feel that fish.

Go then, in your canoes, wood or not
    don't you see
    see for yourself.
Kill the fish, and eat it.

Just be careful in the DMZ.

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Haven't been over the border myself since pre-Covid - but if you go, don't forget your passport! Canada will let you in without it, but the US won't let you back in the states. Canadian border folks are nice about reminding folks of that though.

Call it a De-militarized Area if you wish - but it is indeed a thing.

All, or nearly all, military forces have been removed from EU borders - except for transit.

Some countries have no military - the whole land is a DMZ.

I know that is a scary thing to contemplate for those who see war as a solution to anything.

Yes, I did answer you. By treaty there are no military forces at the border (there must be some geographical limit, but I am not sure what it is.)

Trump stupidly tried to put US troops on the border with Canada, but Justin T. complained and the US backed off.

One of our city parks faces the Lake and Canada - I am working on getting a monument put up there to memorialize Rush-Bagot.

The Canadians celebrated the 200th anniversary of R-B; as far as I know the US did not.

CFB Chilliwack was pretty close. Boundary Bay Airport, which had operational air force squadrons during WW2, is just over 4 nautical miles north of the border.

There've been troops on the border & within 100 miles of it since GW Bush - though it was allowed long before. Yes, the vehicles say "Homeland Security", but they're loaded with automatic weapons & the agents stop people going about their business on a regular basis. Try the joy of getting waved into a rest area on the interstate in your home state & finding it full of "Border Patrol" carrying ARs wearing bulletproof gear & helmets who demand your ID. DMZ my sweet patootie.

When the US Navy held fleet week in the port of Toldeo, Ohio a while back they had to get permission from the Canadians to do so.

I protested the event with Vets For Peace, proud to say.

I would guess that a peace in Eastern Europe will involve some demilitzrized areas - probably extensive ones . . .

that is unless your ilk succeeds in turning the planet into a glowing ball of radioactive plasma.

What are you on about ?? There are DMZ's/areas all over the place, some working better than others.

DMZ stands for DeMilitarized Zone. What I was on about is that the US-Canada border is hardly demilitarized - at least on our side.

Study up - nothing bigger than a 50 cal machine gun is allowed.

I do realize however that us militarists keep pushing on this . .. . DHS to me is a military organization.

I want the demilitarized area to be larger and more effective . .

    how about you ??

The CADIZ airspace doesn't matter to anyone who isn't flying a jet in from the ocean.

Enjoy your trip, and celebrate that you can do it with "The Giant American Capitalist Dollars That Every Canadian Wants To Collect" now that the currency has degenerated to match the spine of our Starbucks-Menu-Graduate leader.

You can check in to Canada in such situations on a cell phone. They are very efficient. Returning to the U.S. by boat can get complicated, as there isn't much communication in place for returning vessels.

This is how the US Reich Wing shows its appreciation for the Great White North . . . Tucker

“I’m completely in favor of a Bay of Pigs operation to liberate that country. Why should we stand back and let our biggest trading partner ... why should we let it become Cuba? Like, why don’t we liberate it? We’re spending all this money to liberate Ukraine from the Russians. Why are we not sending an armed force north to liberate Canada from Trudeau? And I mean it.”

I’m sure you’ll be most welcome in the Maritimes, Mickey! June is a great month to travel through there, when everything is green and growth is well underway. September is a sailors month, warm water, fresh breezes, and lots of sunshine, most years. PEI is my home and defines summer for many downeast; don’t miss it if you have the time. / Jim

Well, you can sail through Canadian waters without clearing customs. What you can't do is:

    1. Land
    2. Anchor or moor
    3. Have any contact with another vessel

But you can legally sail (or motor) in Canadian waters if you don't do those things.

Mickey, If you would not mind driving a little further, (3 hours??) we would be happy to welcome you to Gagetown. Good boating guaranteed (oars and power, we don't sail anymore), with interesting inland water. Plenty of places to stay.
