Jay Leno Broke His Collarbone, Ribs and Kneecaps in Motorcycle Crash Last Week

Jay Leno is on the mend again!

In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal published Thursday, the comedian, 72, revealed that he is recovering from a recent motorcycle accident that left him with several broken bones, only months after he sustained second-degree burns in a fire that broke out in the garage of his Los Angeles home.

Detailing that he "got knocked off" his motorcycle on Jan. 17, Leno told the outlet, "I've got a broken collarbone. I've got two broken ribs. I've got two cracked kneecaps."

"But I'm okay!" the star — who is returning to Las Vegas in March — added. "I'm okay, I'm working. I'm working this weekend."

A representative for Leno did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

According to Leno, he was on the road testing a vintage 1940 Indian motorcycle when he noticed the scent of leaking gas and decided to pull over to investigate.

"So I turned down a side street and cut through a parking lot, and unbeknownst to me, some guy had a wire strung across the parking lot but with no flag hanging from it," he explained to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "So, you know, I didn't see it until it was too late. It just clothesline me and, boom, knocked me off the bike. The bike kept going, and you know how that works out."

The former Tonight Show host told the outlet that he didn't make his accident public knowledge at first because there was so much chaos and coverage from his prior November incident.

"You know, after getting burned up, you get that one for free," he said, then joking: "After that, you're Harrison Ford, crashing airplanes. You just want to keep your head down."

Back in November, Leno and his longtime friend, Dave Killackey, were working on a clogged fuel line in the undercarriage of a 1907 White Steam Car parked in the TV host's 140,000-square-foot Burbank garage when he sustained severe second-degree burns all over his face and upper body.

Within minutes, paramedics arrived, and by the next day, Leno had checked into The Grossman Center, where he was treated for burns across his face, neck, chest, hands and left arm.

Over nine days, Leno — whose wife of 42 years, Mavis, slept beside him at The Center — underwent two skin grafting surgeries (one with human cadaver skin and another with pig intestine) to help regenerate new healthy skin, as well as sessions in hyperbaric chambers to help oxygenate tissue. Within six days after he left the Center, Leno was back onstage, performing standup at the Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California.

In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE a month after the accident, Leno described the ordeal in detail, stating, "It felt exactly like my face was on fire. Maybe like the most intense sunburn you've ever had, that'd be fair to say."

As he continued to heal, Leno said he was aware that his situation could have been much worse. "I know how bad it could have been," he explained. "But I'm okay. And I'm sure I'll continue to do the same stupid things I've always done. Just maybe a little bit more carefully!"

my situational awareness went down a notch in my 50’s commuting by bike. Potential conflicts I used to see a mile away were popping up 50’ away. Exits and entrances to parking lots off of 45 mph fourlane roads especially dicey. I’m amazed there isn’t more carnage.

Whoever hung that wire needs to answer for it. It's hard to imagine it was an honest accident.

That’s what I mean. There’s hundreds of potential hazards one calculates while traveling even at low speeds and “woops, where’d that come from?” So sure “someone put up a wire” but someone might have put up a cable with a dingy metal triangle hanging from the middle that goes up regularly and Leno simply didn’t see it like the dozens of car drivers who have almost run me over on a bicycle in daylight.

I had a hell of a scare a couple days ago when I got in the side by side and backed up only to see my 15 mo old grandson standing two feet away to the side looking up at me. I was sure he was 30’ away.

For the most part experience is making the same mistakes over and over again, only with greater confidence.

Everyday Jay Leno walks on this planet is numbered under the eyes of a zealous god when Leno owns a 1939 Lagonda V12 and God doesn't.

It will be interesting to see what happens when he passes. Will his collection become an awesome museum, or will his widow auction them off?

His collection is nothing compared to Bill Harrah's
I suspect unless he has some stipulation and funding to care for it it will be sold off and Paul can get the Vincent.

(Or get in line for the Vincent!)

Century Cycles in San Pedro used to do a fun Father’s Day barbecue. Everyone with a vintage British bike in LA would show up, or so it seemed. The story was that this shop was the first on the west coast to sell British motorcycles. The man who started the shop had died, and his ashes were in an urn behind the register. My kind of place.

I saw Leno there once with a magnificent fully faired Black Shadow. Also saw some Manx Nortons, which were super nice.

I had no idea. It seems like SOME wealthy people know how to spend their money in interesting ways.

Several years ago, I was riding to work, going about 30 m/h on the route I always take (took, in these latter days). There was a construction site that I passed every morning, where they were building a new crop of "Seattle Skinnies". Just before I got to it — maybe 30 feet? — I noticed that the temporary electric service drop to the construction site had dropped to about my neck level across the road.

I flattened myself on the handlebars and the cable whacked the top of my helmet. Gave me the shivers thinking about what might have happened if I hadn't noticed it. Best case taken off the bike. Worst case . . . decapitated, maybe.

It must have just happened — I pulled over to get myself settled, and a truck going the other way had already stopped.

Needless to say, there was nobody on the job site, which might have been a good thing, because I would have bitten somebody's head off regarding their shoddy workmanship and risk to life and limb.

I'm sure I won't be the only one to hope that the day is a long way off.I think a lot of us enjoy watching a man with excellent taste enjoying his vehicles and telling us about it.The person who strung the wire that did the damage might get away with it.

    I enjoy on all counts.

Seems CNBC may be canceling it. That may not affect web availability.

Whoever put that cable up should get in big trouble.

Think he might be worried about things coming in threes?
