    Default Breathable Padded Fabric?

    Here's a fiddly optimization question.

I just finished my kick-up rudder assembly.

I enjoy sewing and would like to make a simple bag to store this in the boat while trailering. I'll probably also make a sock for the tiller. The ideal material would both cushion against scratching bumps and also breathe enough that I could slide the rudder in wet without asking for trouble. I thought of using polyester batting between 500 denier nylon, but have found in other applications that bags made this way can hold a good deal of water.

Sailrite recommends two layers of Odyssesy Softouch with a panel of phifertex mesh.

That looks OK, but I wonder if there isn't some kind of foam option that offers a bit more padding. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

For that kind of stuff, I'd probably line an outer shell of Sunbrella or Odyssey (both breathable) with a good grade of acrylic or polyester sheepskin-style fleece, which is super breathable, fast drying and provides some cushion.

Thanks Todd, good to know as I have been considering the options for the same task.

Great job on the rudder and tiller, Pez. The copper details are a nice touch.
    Cool work bench too.

    Cheers,
    Mike.

Thank you Todd! Sunbrella lined with poly fleece is exactly what I’ll do. I’ll need a boat cover soon enough so I might as well order the material now and use this small project as practice. It’s great to get expert advice so quickly.

Mike, I appreciate the compliments! I am really just muddling through; all credit should go to the designer.
That bench I’ll take some credit for, though. It’s the most useful thing I’ve built.

I banged these bags out this weekend. Thanks again for the advice.

I was overwhelmed with parsimony at the fabric store and bought non-sherpa fleece at a third the price. Having invested time in the bags, I wish I had just paid the marginal cost. Oh well - sooner or later I'll learn from this experience.
