I've googled and googled and I can't find any corroborating legitimate sources every one is from some ultra right wing source with questionable factuality.

Can any of you confirm or deny the veracity of this read meat story

Personally, I call BS - those agencies don't have the resources to deal with the magnitude of the tracking required to deal with all gun owners. If they're looking at particular gun owners, there must be some particular reason to get them to expend the resources.

Epilog to this story: FYI this is the same "friend" who brought a loaded 9mm handgun to our trip to the LA Auto Show without informing me.

the law creating the nics is very specific about record retention
it specifies that all nics records that are a 'successful' must be destroyed or deleted with 90 days
and that all records that are 'fails' must be retained and become parts of fbi's permanent crime database

that said during the clinton administration the fbi did not follow the law and they retained the records of successful applications - there is no evidence that these records were used in anyway by any agency

the george w administration deleted the records and to the best of my knowledge the record retention since then has followed the letter of the law
