I see that the world's oldest person, a nun in France, died a few days ago aged 118.
She drank a glass of red wine every day.

Atlantic Canada's provinces have periodic get togethers among their Health Ministers, to see if there's anything they oughta do together for better effect.

At the request of their Public Health folks, they recently chatted about whether to collectively raise the legal age both for buying tobacco and for buying alcohol to 21. They were all in for exploring the tobacco thing (probably won't happen), but Newfoundland drew a firm line at the practicality of even dreaming about raising the drinking age to 21.

"I think the warning labels on alcoholic beverages are too bland. They should be more vivid. Here are a few I would suggest: "Alcohol will turn you into the same asshole your father was."; "Drinking will significantly improve your chances of murdering a loved one."; "If you drink long enough, at some point you will vomit up the lining of your stomach."

Saw a video where the guy said "People say alcohol makes you stupid - it doesn't. There's quite a lot of research on this, it doesn't affect a person's IQ or cognitive ability at all. What it affects is the Executive function - not if you think X might happen, but whether or not you care."

That is, alcohol's effect on inhibitions is "revelatory", or perhaps (in the strict sense) "apocalyptic." It doesn't produce new emotions, it just lets the existing pool of emotions burbling around express themselves. Which is why alcohol contributes both to a lot of lovely romantic evenings, and also to a lot of fistfights and murders.

Most probably quite a bit less given the amount of micro-plastics in tea bags.

I suppose without alcohol... some portions of Canadian population would decrease.
Without friends none of this is possible.

I love how all the addicts get super defensive about being confronted with the truth in consuming, arguably, one of the most unhealthy and destructive products on the market.

And Paul, my life is plenty worth living without consuming alcohol.
In the US this perverted idea of “blood and soil” over “constitutional principles” is the most radical and anti-democratic and anti-Conservative idea I have heard in my lifetime.

Maybe some day, It's a hell of lot more likely because I don't drink more than a handful of drinks per year.

I have been studying up on astrophotography, readying myself for the bortle 4 sky's I will be moving to. There is no way I'd retain half of what I have if I drank as much as the average person. I'm glad my life isn't so insufferable that I need to inebriate myself to get through it.

Honestly, I could give two sh17s if someone wants to enjoy a drink now and again. What I find so amusing is how many people will rightfully decry the evils of firearms in society and in the same breath be ready to fight if someone points out the ills if alcohol consumption. What is it? Alcohol is directly attributable to 140,000 deaths per year? No tears for all the abused and neglected children of alcoholics? The senseless automobile deaths? The medical costs . . . Some really delusional people round here

I had heard about it, one of the folks on an AP group I lurk in had mentioned it and was trying to express it with some extensive data they pulled on m31 recently.

yeah, as I said, a handful, less than five drinks per year. I have a drink at Xmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and the one or two other family gatherings I go to. That's actual moderation. I could take or leave it but I feel like it makes me look like less an alien to my wife's family. Our society is so fuc43d up that a person who doesn't drink is more likely to be judged as an alcoholic (who is abstaining) than one that does . . .

If you look at the map that you linked in #24, most of the Bruce Peninsula is pretty effing dark.

I need to point out here that beer, in most human civilisations, was a great deal safer to drink than water until very recent times………… and then there's Flint.
If Jane Ayre had drunk beer instead of the water filtered through rotting corpses in the villiage graveyard she may have lived a great deal longer.
