Interesting Heat Gun

I may have to think about getting one of these. I've got a Milwaukee heat gun right now, but it's just got "hot" and "hotter" for temperature control and the only fan speed is "hurricane".

1,500 watts. Temperature can be set in 10º F increments from 125º F to 1,300º F. And 5 different fan speeds.

I got a de walt with digital adjustments like that maybe?
It seems very “nervous”, like the temp jumps around between what I want and what it is.

I own one that I was given and have used several others of this model. Its good, however, honestly the diversity of controls is not something I usually think to use. That said the few times I have needed to lower the temp its been nice to have that ability. To me the biggest improvement over standard heat guns is that when you turn it off it automatically starts a cool down mode that helps prolong the life of the heating element.

I have one of those. There are real series of discrete steps for both temperature and fan speed. I have never measured to see how accurate the temperature settings are, but I can adjust between "not so hot" and "a little bit hotter." If I try to soften epoxy with a temp > 950*F, it sets off the garage smoke alarm. The cool down feature is for real. The cooling cycle takes a long time, but leaves the tool safe so you won't burn yourself when you pick it up. It's a good tool that I have found very handy. It replaced a Lowes house brand heat gun that was not durable.

I have a 'gun I bought 40-odd years back.

Cast aluminum fan housing & handle stub, wood handle. Switch does HEAT - off - FAN only. Weighs a ton, always worked when needed. Used at the start for bending high pressure laminates when doing cabinetry, all sorts of things since.

Whether I'd find a use for 10F increments is kinda moot as long as "ol' red" still works. I want less heat I open the damper wheel, or cook with it closed, or hold it farther off.

Perfect timing, folks - I have 10 pieces of 'heat-shrink tubing' to shrink down for a project, and my two options are : Sneak the wife's hair dryer out of the house / use it on a high setting -- or -- I have a small butane torch ( think creme brule' ) Any opinions ?


These heat-shrink pieces are 1/2" × 4" . . .

Agreed. 10º F increments is a little granular. 25º or 50º would be more than sufficient, I'd think. But it makes the marketing folks happy -- let's them brag about how many more temperature settings their heat gun's got than the other guys' heat guns.

I have never tried heat shrinks with a hair dryer nor with a larger heat gun. Is she a good sport?
I have done many with various open flames, seems like I always manage to singe one or two per session. I have gotten an Amazon special mini heat gun and the 328 pcs heat shrink tubing.
The small butane torch/lighters work pretty good too and I keep one in the electrical toolbox for times I don't have AC power to run the mini heat gun.

If you were already planning to buy her a new one, then go for it.

A cheapo propane torch with a low flame works just fine as long as you keep it moving.

Somehow this reminds me of when I was traveling in Europe and a friend who had brought a 110 v. hairdryer tried drying her hair after somehow managing to plug it in to a 220v. socket. Interesting new hair style.

Kinda beyond what I'D select were I "shrink wrapping gifts" I have to believe... who shrink-wraps gifts anyway?

^ SP-, when we owned our flower / candy / gift shop, we would often shrink wrap a special kind of clear bag over a gift basket (food or fruit items, sometimes ) It kept the gift basket items together and added a 'professional' appearance . Michael's and other craft stores carry a similar bag.

The hairdryer would probably work fine for your heat shrink, and your wife should be able to use after without any problems. Chances are, the new hairdryer you buy her won't be as good as the "old" one you.
