I'm building a Peregrine 18, and want to store it in my shop, up to the ceiling to keep it out of the way. I tried a couple cheap block-and-tackle sets, but they were the kind of PITA that would keep you from boating as often. I dreamed of all kinds of winches and set-ups to get the job done more easily. One day, while browsing for something else, I hit upon the solution- a worm gear, split drum winch! I never knew such a thing existed. Worm gear is great, because it stays wherever you stop, up or down. A split drum is perfect for my application, as it allows for two separate cables at the same time, so the bow and stern rise together. The downside is that it's a 30:1 ration, which is a LOT of cranking, but I just ran a nut onto it, and spin it with a cordless drill. It takes about 30 seconds to go up or down. I still have safety ropes under it in the event of a failure, but it's all overkill for a 125 lb. boat. I also made my own swaging die so I could make my own eye loops in the cable. Sorry for the sideways pictures; they're correct on my computer (???)
