At the website they list a whole bunch of film tones you can emulate. Is that something you set before you take a pic? Or before you export? So many choices. Will it fit your pocket?
Good lookin camera
“Come, come, my conservative friend, wipe the dew off your spectacles and see the world is moving" - Elizabeth Cady Stanton
It doesn't have image stabilization? I shoot in low light enough where I would miss it.
the xe4 has no stabilization
no hybrid optical viewfinder
no built in flash
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
The film simulation is only relevant when shooting jpeg - if shooting "Raw" then you sort that out in post - there is the option of shooting "Raw+ Jpeg".
There ar optically stabilized lenses available - the OIS 15-45 makes a handy and still reasonably pocketable package.
If you want built in flash then the XE-3 , 2 and 1 all have iit - whether you need it or not is an interesting question.
Pack an extra battery.
I'd much rather lay in my bunk all freakin day lookin at Youtube videos .
The majority of the photos that I have posted for several years have been taken with one of these.
Panasonic Lumix G 25mm F1.7 ASPH $147 at B&H or Amazon

I have an Lumix G7 that I use to shoot 4k video for various explainer videos at my work. I like the small size of the M43 system. I have a 12-35 Lumix standard zoom. If I was to upgrade the camera body (used G9? I dunno) I’d want to build a kit around that zoom. Maybe add a 17mm and then something much longer for wildlife.
Or maybe I’d go a whole other direction. Film sort of has my attention at this point. I really enjoy it too.
by the time of this trip he will have an iphone 15 pro maximus
should be sufficient
samsung s22 might be interesting, if he would embrace the technology and practice for a month or before going
seriously, he should borrow his friends x100v for a good long week and use it for everything that he would normally use his current iphone for; one of two things will emerge from such an exercise
1. he will immediately buy a x100v
2. he will remain convinced there is no more convenient appliance than his iphone

i was being facetious
sony has a compelling entrant
and that's saying a lot because i really in general dislike sony products
full frame mirrorless rangefinder in a pretty compact size
in body image stabilization
ginormous evfinder
expansive glass selection - native sony and zeiss glass plus third party including leica, canon, and nikon
if i had settled on sony as my system of choice this would be my second body
35mmf2.8

The only thing which would bother me about the X-E series for Joe's trip is the weather sealing......
Without the boat, no issue.
Perhaps he could add a second used Nikonos, as much for pose value as anything else.

This is what we use for travel photography. It isn't necessarily the top contender in all image categories, but it has some very important qaualities for sailing: top of class stabilization and auto focus in a splash proof housing. It has lots of tactile controls and is light and ergonomic enough for one handed shooting while leaning out over the rail. It is a solid video camera as well, shooting 4k with external or internal mic, and the back screen can flip around if selfies are your thing.
For a well rounded daily workhorse we've been very happy with it. Olympus OM-D E-M5.
It was a massive upgrade over our old DSLR.
These are straight from the camera, no editing at all.

Yes, the Olympus OM-D E-M5 would work nicely, but Joe seems to be stuck on a rangefinder style body.
I wonder if there is possibility to rent a Leica for a month![]()

Optical (or even digital) view finders have their points. I have two cameras (mobile phone and an early aging Fuji) that only rely on the LCD screen for picture composition - in summer half the time I have to shoot with only a rough idea of what might be on the photo and what won't as the LCDs are not bright enough. The picture quality on both is good, you just don't know in advance what will be on the pictures.
Sigma FP with the 45mm man.
Without friends none of this is possible.
Just get the vinyl wrap for your phone

The Sonys have a horrible menu that makes you want to punt it over a hedge just trying to get it to do a self timer or whatever. They feel like techy gadgets, not what I want from a camera.
I bet you can find a Nikon Z mirrorless 6/7 for a grand second hand. 45mp also.
^ simple Nikon Z is pretty cool with a fitted 35 mm. Light, compact and can be tossed around. A cheap light lens really works.
I would look for a camera that can be charged with usb-c cable. Nobody wants to carry a separate charger.
Without friends none of this is possible.
i have a nikon z
the self timer is buried in the menu
fortunately the nikon menu system is pretty intuitive, also its the same basic menu ive been using for fifteen years
i think the problem with nikons for joe's use is they are not pocketable nor unobtrusive

I just went to an amazing local camera shop and I came REAL close to pulling out the AmEx on this Leica Q2 “Ghost” Hondinkee.

But at $5,700 I enjoy being married more![]()
I did have them put me on the waitlist for the Fuji X100V at $1,400 its divorce proof![]()
The guys running the place are real camera buffs, they have large format printers with archival paper, two studio spaces one for cars and one for everything else, as well as a rotating gallery of photographers.
We had a nice chat and I showed them on my iPad some of my iPhone photos, because I wanted to explain my shooting style. They were actually blown away at what can be done with an iPhone. One guy looking at both the Nun & the girl in the door photo, said matter of factly they look like a photographer Henri Cartier Bresson, you should look him up( They said it I didn’t )

I was explaining to them this is why I have a hard time buying a traditional camera. They said the only problem is doing any prints larger that 8.5x11 it wont look good. They then added that it was a shame because they would be willing to give me a show in their gallery, which was very flattering.

That was after I turned down the Leica Q2 and put on the list for the Fuji which will probably arrive in 2 months or so they say. Also now I’m reading about The Q2 near mythical reputation among street photographers. They even make a B&W ONLY version that is ACTUALLY more $$$$$

its cheaper to buy a q2 than it is to buy just a correspondingly fast leica 28mm lens!
pity they dont make a 50mm q2 and a 90mm q2![]()

Canon 5d (classic) with 50mm. Quite capable, simplistically elegant. Get your own on facebook marketplace for less than 300. Shoots the most beautiful 12 meg photos.

I stripped the color out with ipad Lightroom and photoshop.

Yea I almost pulled the trigger but they didn't have the 24mm short lens to go with it. They have the lens coming in a week or so they put the x-T5 on hold for me. So we will see I'm kinda leaning towards the Fuji 100V because its simpler fixed lens and my buddy has one so he can help me set up the presets.

I will be completely honest I'm intimidated AF going back to a traditional camera with fStops, shutter speed and the millions of configurations. There is something to be said about just pulling out my phone and snap and upload, post, email, text an image
