    Default just saying Hi

    Hi everyone,
    My name is Stu,
I have restored a skin on frame kayak, and built my own version of a East Greenland style kayak 18 months ago.
Plus I am planning on designing and building at least one sof tender next winter.

I am looking at upgrading my 25' Ericson sailboat soon, and am looking at the possibility of a woodie.
So I thought I would join you all and see what happens.

I am pretty good with hand tools, and happen to be good friends with a recently retired yacht designer and builder now living on one of BC's Gulf Islands, so I am not too worried about upkeep and small repairs.
However like everyone else I could sure use some advice on what not to do or what not to buy at times.
    Stu

Hi backachya. Welcome to the forum.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

The use of hand tools for anything on a boat except a romantic notion is not a thing.

HI Back atcha! Unlike Wiz, I like hand tools...but I don't turn out nearly the work he does. Looking forward to hearing of your adventures

    Welcome!
    There are opinions here...
(I'm a hand tool guy with no tolerance for goop and grinding, might as well have a steel boat.)

    Welcome to the forum.

It's not quite a swamp but be aware that for every issue that comes up there will be at least 3 forumites weighing in with at least 4 different opinions, often all contradictory.

You imply but don’t come right out and state that you will be looking to acquire an existing wooden boat, not build a new one. That means a different set of challenges than building from scratch.

Assuming your retired designer/builder friend has built wooden boats, it might be a good idea to sit down with him/her and have a number of conversations about different construction types (plank-on-frame, strip planking, cold moulded, marine plywood and so on) and their various advantages and disadvantages. You would also profit from sifting through past threads in the Building/Repair section for other repair/restoration/maintenance stories to start to get a handle on the kinds of problems and work you might encounter. The forum search engine is not as helpful as using Google’s site search feature here.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, bearing in mind the above caution. You will get some good advice among all the answers.

    Good luck!
    Alex

    welcome aboard!

There is great comfort in the boat you already have. I hope you get lots of rides on other people's wooden boats. Sure shows you a lot before you dip your toes further.

Meet new friends. Ask many questions. Enjoy the journey.
Without friends none of this is possible.

After having spent a LOT of time rebuilding the Vets For Peace Golden Rule

I told my wife to shoot me if I ever bought a wooden boat.
