    Default A....n

...is a boat in a ninety-year old children's book. I can't currently say what her name is, or which book(s) she's from, or who might have written it, right now (because of 'reasons'), but there may be some here who can work that out.

An offspring of, umm, a family directly involved in the original book, has, today, requested a model of that boat mentioned in these books. Full access is granted to the boat in question, that they own, which is currently located in Cumbria, for photos and measuring, before I set to.

Do you know, I do think I think I ought.

Go for it! Becoming part of that legacy would be amazing! I think that is the best series of children's books ever written.

And in other (completely unrelated) news, I've just coughed up to be camping and sailing at Coniston, early August. Based at, umm, Bank Ground Farm. Wherever that is.

Fancy a thread on that? With photos?

I'll do my best. No night sailing, of course. It'd be dufferish.

I found a photo of her afloat at the Jetty. I assume that she is on loan, as moist museum's acquisition artifacts rather than borrow them
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

We must. To the Secret Harbour and a splash of some Bunnahabhain? I'd appreciate that.

When we visited the Jetty last summer, the associated boat(s) were reproductions from one of the films, not historical originals - at least that was what was conveyed to us.

One of them is. About the other, I found a website that gives its history, she was originally the Mavis bought by the current owners' family in 1928.

You just need a couple of candle lanterns to line up on at night, IIRC.

When you build your model, I suggest a scale of 1/1.

By the way, wasn't there a recent comment on another thread about the "unpopularity" of small clinker boats in the UK?

Few of us can still afford them, and they are no longer competitive on the racing circuit.

That makes sense--I was thinking traditionally, when lots and lots of British small boats seemed to be clinker built.

But I think those able/willing to build their own would find them more affordable than a new production boat, wouldn't they?

Don’t know about that, Nick, but this link from the Nancy Blackett Trust seems to agree with what we were told about those boats being reproductions for one of the movies.

    https://nancyblackett.org/2019/03/27...-jetty-museum/

Other boats belonging to Ransome, Beatrix Potter, and those that were important to the area are at the museum.

At one time there were many of this type of boat round the broads, often used by eel catchers.

Purchased at £1 per foot from ship breakers or repair yards. That supply has now dried up, unless you like orange Tupperware.

As has been posted, they do still race with other similar boats and there are numerous local one designs with healthy fleets of traditional boats. There is still the occasional wooden Merlin Rocket constructed of glued lap plywood and indeed we had a thread on one upstairs a few years ago from Texas. The cost of a super finish on a wooden hull can only make the boats rather expensive compared with the carbon equivalent and the synthetic version won't need painting.

All of which diverts us from the topic under discussion and congrats to Andy on having the opportunity to create such an iconic model.

Storage and maintenance, I think, Tom.

My very plastic Wayfarer is 29 this year. It takes twenty minutes to pressure-wash her back into shape each season. She cost £1300 a few years ago.

While I'd love a clinker dinghy, and a lugsail at that, it's never going to be practicable.

    Shame, really.
