you're still getting off light. How much gas tax would you pay by fueling a similar-sized ICE car?

I seem to remember reading that highway wear increases as the fourth power of the vehicle weight.

Figure 10,000 miles a year for ten years.
Which is more “ecological” the energy put into manufacturing and using the batteries or the energy in manufacturing and using several thousand gallons of gasoline.

Reg for an electric car here in VT is $2.00 cheaper; $74.00 instead of $76.00

Does your reg fee include a personal property tax or the like?

Ca gas tax is $.56/gal so $200 is around 360 gallons. If you had a Prius that would get you 15,000 miles a year @41 mpg.

Here at least nominally the fuel tax pays for road upkeep. The debate about how electric cars will be taxed to compensate for the same road wear is stil undecided, but there will be a tax eventually. Battery disposal is also still not talked about, as is the added risks if an EV catches fire. Then there's the matter of proprietary design for charging points rather than universal. You'd think they would have learned from phone and computer experience.

That’s a much smaller downside than sending $700 every month to Elon Musk. Month after month, year after year.

Depends on how much energy it takes to mine and manufacture the batteries, and whether they are constructed to be 100% recyclable. I've wondered about all these things as E vehicles scale up.

So a 8000 lb truck does as much road wear as 16 4000lb vehicles,,,A 40,000 lb truck as much as 1000 4000 lb vehicles. I figure one logging truck on our road is equal to 6 months of cars.

I would consider that fee to be insignificant compared to the purchase price. You should look at the total picture rather than complain about a minor expense.

Not that much from the state in Ca but definitely from the federal gov’t, even if you have an ICE vehicle.

Providing incentives for purchasing an EV is a kind of subsidy. Not sure if Ca. has any though.

In New York, EVs and IC vehicles of six cylinders or more, pay an extra $32.50 fee every two years.

Additionally, the state provides $2,000 rebate for a new EV purchase or lease. Used EV sales receive pro rated rebate.

NYC offers a discount on tolls for bridges and tunnels. Example is $3.50 less on a toll that is $12.75 full rate.

Finally, the Federal Government provides EV buyers a $7,500 rebate.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_t..._United_States

The United States federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel.[1][2] The federal tax was last raised October 1, 1993 and is not indexed to inflation, which increased 93% from 1993 until 2022.
so Fed gov’t is subsidizing the consumption of gasoline by about $.17/gal. Cuz…socialism, nahh, cuz Americans want a free lunch and this one jives with a sense of entitlement for low cost fuel. No matter arguments for fiscal responsibility or that the cost of building roads and bridges have gone up in 30 yrs.

WOW everyone is all over the place, with a million reasons. They are simply charging me an extra $200 a year because I don't pay the road and maintenance tax at the the PUMP, thats what it says on the bill thats it.

We pay a $200 annual tax for the same reason on our Leaf. $200 is much more than the gas tax for a comparable ICE car. But the car has essentially been free so we aren’t complaining.

Trucking companies pay hefty road use taxes. These taxes are built into the prices they charge to bring you your Amazon orders.

Joe, how long do your van tires last? Not a gotcha question, just curious.

We see a lot of logging trucks on local roads; thus avoiding state troopers and weigh stations on the interstate.
In England they drive in the left of the road, in New England, we drive on what's left of the road.
