I stopped doing so some years ago. Eventually my family did too.

    It's a political construct, New Year's Day.

We should all be celebrating the Winter Solstice, the only reality of this time of year.

These days, I can drop the odd ball without staying up.
Happy New Year, hopefully, for you all.

    ^ And that makes two

We watch Jools Holland's music prog.
Who is performing on Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny 2022?

Helping Jools Holland to ring in the New Year on the Hootenanny tonight will be:

    • George Ezra
    • Self Esteem
    • Cat Burns
    • Andy Fairweather Low
    • Roland Gift
    • Gabrielle
    • The Real Thing
    • Rachael and Vilray
    • Ruby Turner
    • Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards

Why do we start a new year, with promises to improve?
Who began this tradition of never-ending pressure?
I say, the end of a year, should be filled with congratulation, for all we survived.
And I say a new year should start with promises to be kinder to ourselves, to understand better just how much we bear, as humans on this exhausting treadmill of life.

And if we are to promise more, let’s pledge to rest, before our bodies force us.
Let’s pledge to stop, and drink in life as it happens.
Let’s pledge to strip away a layer of perfection to reveal the flawed and wondrous humanity we truly are inside.

Why start another year, gifted to us on this earth, with demands on our already over-strained humanity.
When we could be learning to accept, that we were always supposed to be imperfect.
And that is where the beauty lives, actually.
And if we can only find that beauty, we would also find peace.

I wish you peace in 2023.
Everything else is all just a part of it.
    Let it be so.

We did our celebration on the Solstice, as is right and proper. That said, "New Year's" is a fine excuse for a get-together so we're doing so with a bunch of friends for a potluck, a planning meeting for an upcoming event, possibly a game of darts and, for those willing to stay up late enough (not us) perhaps a glo-stick lighted archery shoot (weather permitting).

I’m going to watch the Seattle celebration on TV. They’re going to have one of those choreographed drone displays, which I find fascinating.

I too am more mindful of the solstices. But I must admit, the shotguns and automatic weapons fire does wake me up in time to welcome in the new year.
“Aren’t you supposed to be the gentlemen who lie for the good of their country?”
    “That’s diplomats. We’re not gentlemen.”
“So you lie to save your hides.”
    That’s politicians. Different game entirely.”

We celebrate, in solidarity with the good people of Iceland, so in bed by 10pm EST.
It is also our anniversary, so a real time to celebrate.

We did, first time in a few years. I now have a slightly sore head and a missing set of keys to prove it!

There is little point in trying to retire before about 12.30 as one of the houses a few hundred yards away lets off a firework extravaganza at midnight.Like Nick,I expect Jools Holland will be occupying the corner of the room, even if I have heard of very few of the acts.

I am amazed that all this pre-christian, pagan solstice stuff was allowed to continue……………
Quiet here, a drink with friends at the top of the hill watching distant fireworks around the bay.

I will wash off my blue paint for the last time and then go to bed about 10PM.

Have to get up early to start on my next year habits.

Watching a yarble drop has never been a thing. Getting sleep and making Sunday breakfast is.
Best Wishes in your new year.

Times Square NYC Youtube channel put out a nice webcast of the music, people enjoying themselves and ball dropping. We enjoyed watching the last hour of it.

Unfortunately that video got blocked sometime overnight.

Traditions I've been happy to eschew.

We watched the frame of a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle start to come together.
A society predicated on the assumption that everyone in it should want to get rich is not well situated to become either ethical or imaginative.
