I guess she won't be using you as a reference for her next job, Joe. ;-)

^^^^^ This Sh!t again ^^^^^
A) we pay the highest in the industry, groomers actually make more per dog than we do and we pay for all the supplies, fuel, maintenance, bla bla bla
B) You have no idea how everyone who works or has worked WITH ( not for ) us raves about what a great company we are to work for. Thats why the good groomers have stayed with us for almost 7 years.
C) You have no idea about our business or our industry

Some folks post out of ignorance.
Some folks post to take a shot at you personally.
Both are unfortunate but, of course, sez more about them than about you.
Anecdote -- As a longtime small business owner, my biggest frustrations were around personnel. I started as a one-man shop, grew things to 12 employees at the largest. The sorts of behaviors Joe is lamenting were a big chunk of my deciding to 'semi-retire' by scaling back to a much smaller operation. I've definitely got some stories.

You think YOU have problems ??
I am trying to arrange for a bottom job on my sailboat.
The marine businesses who supposedly do that work don't return phone calls. Grrrr
I know, I know - just more white people's problems.
" Some folks post out of ignorance." - self identity.. that's a start on the road to recovery. Let it go David.
and Joe, why am I completely unsurprised you missed my point.

Just messing w you Joe. Maybe for every interview appt. you line up a reward for you if there’s a no show. I mean if it’s the 38th time it’s business as usual.

Very interesting point and we currently working with two potential franchises both of them are OWNER OPERATORS who are tired of the exact same staffing issues and are deciding to downsize and go mobile. Additionally they are avoiding the never ending corporate real estate landlord and changing dynamics of their brick and mortar shops. Our primary pool of franchises are owner operators who are tired of ever present staffing issues.
Simple fact is if I could hire groomers as fast as I’m able to acquire customers I would not franchise I would just keep buying vans and expand.

I talked with my daughter about this since she is the age of most of the staff that ghost and she thinks its a California thing because she never experienced or would do that back east. I will say California is the home of the passive aggressive in both staff and customers.

At some point we need to consider the possibility that your competitors are messing with you.

You mean SoCal. And, more specifically the OC. Not, at all, a representation of California. This is a huge, crazy banana, and it varies a lot. A lot.
My wife hosts corporate partners who are always amazed at the size and diversity of California. They imagine they’ll be able to visit LA area, Inland Empire, Central Valley, and The Bay Area all in one day. Hahahahahahahahahaha.
And, I trust you know I’m not trying to bust your stuff? Just clarifying that you’re in a unique biome down there.![]()
I agree and apologize Rob. I’m reminded when everyone back east calls when there is a wild fire 6 hr drive from us asking how we are. I’m like it’s like me being worried about you in NY with a fire up in MaineCalifornia is indeed a great big banana

No need to apologize, Yo. None. I don’t really have an idea of back East, at all.
I still trip out that we drove to the airport in SF so I could fly direct to NYC, and it was a longer trip than from NYC to LI to Connecticut and RI. WTH?! Hahaha.
There is a big change at The Bend, and there are vast differences between the coast, valleys, and mountains. It’s a wide ranging demographic, here.
That said, my wife deals with ghosts constantly. Daughter was recently hired as a seasonal employee, and she’s amazed at the attrition of the class of people she was hired with. They just vanish…
I certainly don’t want to distill your dismay or hardship. It truly sucks when someone just disappears from a job and you were counting on them. Just keep grinding, Yo.
You don’t want anyone who would ghost as an employee, anyway, so you’re actually better off.![]()
After a grueling trip from the east coast I lasted one week at Huntington Beach in the summer of '67...Just clarifying that you’re in a unique biome down there.
It was fun, but it wasn't for me.
Without knowing that I had signed on for the rest of my life it was San Francisco or bust for me.
Maybe it’s the business. I’ve hired a bunch of people and never been ghosted once.
Absolutely correct.
When I first started this company with my wife I was like this is gonna be easy all I have to do is hire more of you. THERE ARE NO RENEE GROOMERS OUT THERE. They are all damaged gypsies who chose to work with dogs because they cant deal with people.

Wait! Aren't you working with dogs?
edit to add: "That's a joke, son"
Similar issues here. Being in Portland, a large % of the labor pool for woodworkers was young hipsterish sawdust aficionados... who imagined themselves as the next Nakashima, Aalto, or Maloof. Many of them eventually left to start their own shop, where they could stay pure to their woodworking ideals and undercharge themselves into bankruptcy. Whereupon the became web designers or went off to graduate school. Want to know what % of them were 'in a band'?? <G> Many of them were wonderful folks, and I'm still friends with some. Which didn't help me find & retain a steady core group.

until i sold my business a couple of years ago i had two groomers
one had worked for me part time since 1995
the other worked for me full time since 2008
the two hardest working employees i ever had
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
Maybe its time to raid your competition? Hire groomers away from other groomers.
