Well, I'm probably here because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. My father was on an aircraft carrier off Japan getting ready for the invasion which never happened.

My dad was working on THE BOMB, although it wasn’t till 1960 that he learned that what he worked on was part of it. Climax Molybdenum, Detroit MI. He was told he was researching an alloy that had to do with naval gun barrels.

I was conceived and born smack dab in the middle, in 1943, (as was my boat). Guess people needed something to do to keep their minds off the war.

The word 'dastardly' might be borrowed from FDR. He might be referring to the argument that FDR had advanced knowledge of an attack, but purposefully did nothing.

Very close, although I don't believe FDR had real knowledge of the attack and the mood of the people was not seen as ready for war. I'm sure he welcomed it but the naval sacrifice was higher than he wished. Those of us who watched war materiel being freighted on extremely long trains toward shipping ports for England knew war was coming and inevitable.

Japan had to react to our restriction of their basic supplies and they did react in the only meaningful way open to them. As I watched a large number of B25's gather and fly at a local Columbia, SC airbase, I knew we were making plans for something but not what it might be.

A visit to the Arizona memorial was far more powerful than I imagined it might be.
