Puppers v2.0

Last winter we fostered a litter of rescued pups and their mom. Puppers thread.
They all got adopted out and seem to be thriving.

We took in another bunch this year; five pups and the mom. Pups were two days old when we got them and are seven weeks today.

Momdog is from a northern Montana rez and only about a year old. She’s still skin and bones … and boobies … but is in much better condition now than when we got her. Nice dog, I like her.

Pupdate: The gang are all vaxxed, wormed, fixed, nails trimmed, microchipped, tattooed, adored and ready to go.
Thank Dog for our wonderful friend and ‘retired’ vet that does all of the vet work gratis.

After a close look at her teeth during her spay, the Vet thinks she is closer to two years old. We had thought she was about one. Still but a pup herself and much to learn.

Winnie is nonaggressive, or overly fearful, with the equines and shows little interest in them – just cautious respect, which seems to be mutual. Hopefully the pups pick up on that.
The bitch we had with last year’s litter was aggressive towards the equines and that was such a PITA to manage. Winnie has also been super friendly with all humans she’s met so far while in our care.

Winnie and the pups have also been good with our cat who tolerates them. In fact, the cat lives in the puppy room, or rather, the puppies are borrowing space in the cat room. Sometimes the old cat sits up on her throne gazing at the puppies, purring … Why?

I recently read a couple interesting articles on research being done in Yellowstone studying toxoplasmosis (that’s weird sh!t) in wolves.

The study hypothesizes that wolves become infected with the parasite (t. gondii) that causes toxoplasmosis (toxo) by direct or indirect contact with cougars, the primary host of the protozoan in that environment. In the secondary host, wolves in this case, toxo can cause behavior changes such as greater risk-taking.

Overall, seropositive wolves — those with detectable antibodies indicating infection at some point — were more likely to become pack leaders than seronegative wolves. The connection held even after the researchers accounted for other demographic factors that may affect risk-taking, such as sex or social status. A seropositive wolf was 46 times as likely to become a pack leader when compared to a seronegative wolf. A similar pattern exists for dispersal. The chance that a seropositive wolf would leave its original pack was 11 times as high as that for a seronegative wolf.
