Well George I started out thinking one thing then it turned out manifold. God knows what happens after my afternoon coffee.

I don't see any distant galaxies photobombing the Eagle Nebula one. That must be some thick soup behind it.

The thing that continues to astonish me is the extent to which macro images like the OP resemble images from electron microscopy. I get it, intellectually... but still find it striking.

I can’t wrap my head around what I’m looking at, but it is astonishing.

Then there’s the reference ‘a field the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length”.
No one holds a grain of sand at arm’s length. And many of us can’t see a grain of sand at arm’s length.
How about “a cat turd at the 100yd line”
“ I can’t see a cat’s turd at the 100 yd line!”

Can anyone recommend a good book on Astronomy basics? Not for kids, not for scientists, but a fairly comprehensive book for the adult lay person. Have been perusing Amazon and not finding much, which seems a bit surprising. A focus on our solar system would be perfect.

My only recomendation is a heavy wool blanket and small down comforter.

#13: Believe it or not, from my childhood: The Big Golden Book of Astronomy. I still have it. Ful of Chesley Bonesteel type illustrations. Still way cool.

"Turn left At Orion" regularly gets mentioned as the better "go-to" book for those new to observing.

For Solar System stuff I have to say Wikipedia will get you through orbital mechanics, the physics, and what's what about 'local' objects, and all for free of course.

I already have a decent book on observing, which I don't do much. I was hoping to find something in print as opposed to Wiki. Perhaps a book for 12 year olds might even be worth a look. 12 year olds can understand a lot if the interest is there.
