GA schools in lockdown due to active shooter threats

Something like 6 GA schools received calls of an active shooter. Some of them went into lock down. SWAT was called.

It was apparently well-organized and some sources say it ran across multiple states.

At least one school had students who simply left believing that their school would be the site of the next active shooter, not knowing it was a hoax.

I am trying to imagine a sentence, a penalty, that is appropriate to this kind of behavior. I can't. I suppose we should be grateful it was just a hoax, but I want to see some memorable payback for this kind of behavior.

Me too. Then they usually called a fire drill. I still remember standing outside in the cold, waiting to be let back in.

I think it would be unusual to use schools as polling places when school is in session. Around here they do a “work from home” day when polls are open at schools.

That part of GA is pretty red. If either candidate would benefit from a lower turnout due to this it would be Warnock.

Where I live, public schools are among the locations used as polling places. I can't say that I recall the schools being closed for polling day. These buildings typically have separate entrances for the polling locations - cafeterias or gymnasiums. Security is posted to keep voters from wandering into the rest of the school building.

The article mentions that the calls were "across Georgia". However, if focused in "Red" areas, you can be sure it will be used as an excuse by Republicans that the voting process wasn't fair.

Yes, but the difference is that very few schools actually had bombs. In fact, I can't remember any. School shootings are altogether too real, so the fear in the minds of the students and teachers is very real.

As I mentioned previously, it is very unlikely that these schools are early voting locations if students are in school.

a dozen school districts outside of Chatham County were impacted by the shooting hoaxes, including Baldwin, Burke, Early, Wayne, Muscogee, Coffee, Ware, Camden, Valdosta City, Vidalia City, Glynn, Lowndes, Bartow and Toombs counties.

It is 284 miles as the crow flies from Brunswick, Georgia to Cartersville and the crow would fly over Atlanta according to Google maps. "That part of Georgia" includes most of the state.

Also recently the same thing has happened in Alabama and North Carolina.

None of those counties include Atlanta. None of the bombshell threats were in Atlanta.

Catastrophe drills in schools seems like a pretty good idea to me . . .

Most of ya seem to think that humanity can repeatedly tiptoe right up to the edge of nuclear war, and it will never happen.

In October, at least 14 high schools in Florida received bogus active shooter reports. In September and October, at least 28 states, including Florida, reported hoax calls made to 911 about active shooters on campus. NPR estimates that nearly 200 schools were targeted during that time frame.

One national security expert, Jason Blazakis, told NPR he believes the calls might be coming from Ethiopia.

The latest round of hoax reports is the latest example of how just one person can pose a serious threat to national security.

In November, the FBI said a single juvenile was responsible for most of the racially motivated threats of violence targeting historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) from January 4 through February 1.

Maybe a good precedent for penalizing hoax "active shooter" calls is this one:

"If a person is found guilty of making a hoax call to the Coast Guard, a person can face up to 6 years in prison, a $250,000 criminal fine, a $5,000 civil fine and reimbursement to the Coast Guard for the cost of performing the search"
