Flash rust prevention

Is there an easy (read “cheap”) way to stop flash rust on cast iron prior to painting?

I washed a bunch of these washers to get the gunk off and put them in the sun on a piece of corrugated and they quickly developed a light rust coat.

They are currently in a bucket of molasses and water to get the larger rust chunks off. When done, I plan to paint them.

Maybe dump them out of the last clean water bath and use the big propane torch?

Some of what I learned was...

Motor oil absorbs moisture from the atmosphere by design. Not advised
WD-40 has no corrosion inhibitors
Marvel Mystery oil has no corrosion inhibitors
VCI paper, or liquid must be in an airtight container to work.
LPS-5 works pretty well, needs to be renewed annually, direct exposure to weather will erode it.
Wax is disappointing, I suspect some types are hygroscopic
Camelia Oil is expensive, works in a wooden toolbox or cabinet.
Shellac or Lacquer works better than Boeshield for me.

edit to add; I spray clear lacquer from a spray can on my table saw, bandsaw, jointer etc. it works great. (I keep this around to protect finished weldments until they are galvanized or painted.

I am about to get a collection of old farm ploughs etc sandblasted. Straight from the blasting booth to a lacquer spray booth. We are in a salt air environment and with spray painting as the next step, from we should get about 6 years with touch ups.

instead of sandblasting, you might drag them around through sone dirt behind a tractor

They unearthed the deadman of a late 19 century pedestrian suspension bridge in Littleton, NH a few years ago, the cables were coated with lanolin and wrapped in deer hide, and were pristine.

If you're painting - why not just use Rustoleum? 15 or so years ago I painted a rusty dump truck body with it (pressure washed, let dry, painted it) & 5 years later it still looked great.

Rich was happy with it in his epic wheelbarrow restoration.

Another vote for Oshpo, and allow to dry. Brush off loose residue (if any) and paint.

If you are using alkyd/oil for paint,maybe just splash some paint thinner over the pile.
Maybe toss the whole bunch into a 5 gallon bucket first.

Penetrol. Put it on the bare steel and then splash a little in the rustoleum when you get to painting.
