Movies that have held up and those that don't

I just watched Dr. Zhivago and for me it still seems like a good move; it holds up. Same for Casablanca. I loved "Blue Velvet" when I saw it years ago in the theatre, saw it again and other than the opening scene it doesn't't hold up. Any others come to Mind?

I first saw "Unforgiven" when it came out, I though it was OK, I saw it again years late and was blown away by how good it was.

"The Sting" ranks among my favorite films, but knowing what happens eliminates the many surprise twists.

I have been looking for "To Live and Die in L.A." for a couple years on different streaming services. No luck. I think some films are known to be good and can command higher fees decades after their initial release, so they are kept off the market until they can get their premium revenue.

I have recently been into Neo-Noir films. Some hold up really good. I agree Blue Velvet does not seem as magical as it did when released in theaters.

LA Confidential is good, has held up well. I saw it by accident in a theater, then rented videos and streamed it several times since.

Lawrence of Arabia will forever be one of the five greatest Cinema works. Hard to imagine coming close to the acting, the settings, the music score, the photography. Speaking of which CGI quickly dates action and horror films. Impressive effects today always look worn out tomorrow. Maybe that is why Neo-Noirs hold up well for English speaking audiences where the story is advanced by acting, not effects. What do you look for in a movie? I'm in it strictly for the entertainment value...and nowadays it helps if the dialog is subtitled due to my hearing loss. CODA was great because I could catch ALL of the dialog

At the moment we are still having cable and I finally realized it is time to quit it forever. The quality of the picture is often horrible and the streaming choice is very limited too.

I started re-watching old movies a couple of years ago, to see if they stood up today. The biggest surprise was Easy Rider, which seemed much better than I remembered it. The standout, however, was Doctor Strangelove. Not only entertaining, but frightening in its relevance today.

Best Movie of the last 20 years.

The Revenant is a 2015 masterpiece. Casino Royale is the best Bond movie in the last 50 years. Master and Commander best sailing movie. L.A. Confidential for 1997 maybe better than Chinatown. Usual Suspects a good runner up.

The Searchers by John Ford with John Wayne is still an epic western.

Babe - the film is genius.

Anything that Buster Keaton did is brilliant. The General is a film that is timeless. It is daring, gorgeously filmed and solid in every way.

I just had the absolute pleasure of watching “The Princess Bride” with my two grandchildren, ages 7 and 4. Neither of them had seen it before, though their father (my son) and I knew the dialogue cold. They were mesmerized, just as their Dad and Uncle were when we watched it for the first time, years ago. That movie was an “instant classic” for sure.
