Default Movies that have held up and those that don't

I just watched Dr. Zhivago and for me it still seems like a good move; it holds up. Same for Casablanca. I loved "Blue Velvet" when I saw it years ago in the theatre, saw it again and other than the opening scene it doesn't't hold up. Any others come to Mind?

I first saw "Unforgiven" when it came out, I though it was OK, I saw it again years late and was blown away by how good it was.

I watched the "wizard of oz' the other night, and I enjoyed it.

"The Sting" ranks among my favorite films, but knowing what happens eliminates the many surprise twists.

I have been looking for "To Live and Die in L.A." for a couple years on different streaming services. No luck. I think some films are known to be good and can command higher fees decades after their initial release, so they are kept off the market until they can get their premium revenue.

I have recently been into Neo-Noir films. Some hold up really good. I agree Blue Velvet does not seem as magical as it did when released in theaters.

LA Confidential is good, has held up well. I saw it by accident in a theater, then rented videos and streamed it several times since.

Lawrence of Arabia will forever be one of the five greatest Cinema works. Hard to imagine coming close to the acting, the settings, the music score, the photography. Speaking of which CGI quickly dates action and horror films. Impressive effects today always look worn out tomorrow. Maybe that is why Neo-Noirs hold up well for English speaking audiences where the story is advanced by acting, not effects. Even when the story mismatches the period like the 40's detective story set in early 70's Los Angeles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAYheZweypk , or the 40's detective story set among 1980's High School kids in Brick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zfw8__A7ps

What do you look for in a movie? I'm in it strictly for the entertainment value...and nowadays it helps if the dialog is subtitled due to my hearing loss. CODA was great because I could catch ALL of the dialog

Years ago, on the first tablet computer I had, I signed on for a free week of Netflix. Alone in the house I popped on “Bad Day At Black Rock”. It was mesmerizing. Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine were pure evil.

John Wayne hunting down Maureen O'Hara and spanking her in her underwear while the town watches and cheers in the movie McLintock! has definitely not aged well.
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

    Very good!

To be honest, I can't watch movies about mafia or hard line cops anymore. Good or not, they just strike too close to reality.

I started re-watching old movies a couple of years ago, to see if they stood up today. The biggest surprise was Easy Rider, which seemed much better than I remembered it. The standout, however, was Doctor Strangelove. Not only entertaining, but frightening in its relevance today.

I just had the absolute pleasure of watching “The Princess Bride” with my two grandchildren, ages 7 and 4. Neither of them had seen it before, though their father (my son) and I knew the dialogue cold. They were mesmerized, just as their Dad and Uncle were when we watched it for the first time, years ago. That movie was an “instant classic” for sure.

Bullit - Steve McQueen - great car chase scenes in San Francisco. The story of the car after the movie is pretty interesting - sold at Mecum for 3.74 million, unrestored.

There is an older Christmas movie (I think Rudolph is actually the star) that used stop-action puppetry. The Santa and Rudolph dolls used recently appraised for $1M. On a per pound basis, Santa does better than McQueen.

Saw the Blues Brothers when it first came out... Not impressed.
Unforgiven; Yes, bit of reality about life back then.
    Sting YES
Along with Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid.
    Man and a Woman
    Bullit
    Brief Encounter

Not so much about the story, more the acting.
