Watched Whitnail and I recently. Very disappointed it didn't hold up.
The bicycle thief - amazing every time.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
That scene where he runs from the crop duster.
you’re right, I missed that one!
It holds up well, think. The funny thing about that movie is the “perfect wave” that they found (now called “Bruce’s Beauties” at Cape St. Francis) doesn’t break that often these days. They missed the real gem which is considered one of the best waves in the world: Jeffrey’s Bay.

I have seen almost all the films listed above and I agree with almost everything written so far on this topic.

Two that really stand out for me are ‘the green mile’ and ‘Shawshank’. Those will be classics fifty years from now.

Some movies that got savaged by the film critics are just fine with me, I still enjoy " Water World " and "Johnny Mnemonic" both are unique . Some moves the media film critics liked I found stupid like " The Searchers " and " Unforgiven "
" Treasure of the Sierra Madre " is one of my top movies , it follows the main characters through a number of adventures , just excellent . Some good movies can be found on youtube such as " Lure of the Wilderness " 1952 , boats figure prominently but they don't look the old time pirogues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhSl0m16gi0 the interesting story makes up for the washed out film color .
I loved Local Hero when it came out, anyone watched it recently?

The local Ciné has a yearly 'God Save The Screen' week or so of British films. This one includes 'Local Hero' and 'The Go Between'. Belfast, which we wanted to see, was only shown to school pupils (?)

The Hustler set off a pool craze, which led me into seedy pool halls, and a warning from my mother: "You shouldn't get too good at pool.." That said, the sequel was disappointing, despite the Academy Award. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof seem to suffer from the production values in the 1950s, when Hollywood was trying to compere with the newfangled thing called television. My criticism seems to be one of the few of bad movies from the past, rather than ones worth watching, not that that's a bad thing.
O brother where art thou......
To Catch a Thief
(And it has a wooden boat in it)
What's not on a boat costs nothing, weighs nothing, and can't break
Not that old, but "The Finest Hours" was good...and it, too, features a wooden boat![]()

I might like to watch the original movie version of M*A*S*H. I saw it in a theater with my older brother while we were on vacation together, when it came out. After the TV series became the then longest running show since Bonanza, tediously IMO, the striking affect of the movie has been diluted. I'm afraid if I spooled it up now it would come across as just another long episode instead of the impactful movie it was originally.
I remember seeing the movie Network, which came out in seventy-six, while I was single and stationed in Korea, and enjoyed it, but was wowed by the soliloquy given by Ned Beatty looking down at Howard at the end of the long mahogany conference table. "You have messed with the primal forces of nature! And I will not have it!" "I have seen the face of God..." I enjoyed William Holden as the craggy old news guy, Faye Dunaway not so much, IMO. But when we watched it a couple of months ago, it seemed very dated and less impactful than I remembered it.
Several I enjoyed in Covid times that may not have been mentioned.
Moonstruck. Schmaltzy and not the kind of movie I normally like but saw it recently and it worked brilliantly IMO.
Reservoir Dogs. Also, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Pulp Fiction, but I can re-watch most (not all) QT movies.
And how could I forget Road Warrior?

Probably already mentioned, but I watched The Fifth Element again last night. Just gets better with each watching.
