I just finished off the festivities with a second piece of pecan pie, with some butter pecan ice cream on top.

It was a nice gathering. Good conversation, marvelous food, and the new kitten kept us entertained the whole time. Including the incident when she decided to commandeer the entire turkey platter. She's a klutz, but at least she managed not to spill any drinks, or go swimming in the gravy boat, in her little attempt at piracy.

All the guests have departed now, except for Son2 - who decided to spend the night instead of driving home with a few pumpkin ciders aboard. Besides, the two boys seized the opportunity to repair to the basement, and play video games like they were teenagers again.

    .
The turkey breast was brined overnight and then slathered all over with compound herb butter before going into the smoker. Here the smoked breast rests on the stovetop while the sides dishes are finished.

My dinner: turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, cranberry sauce, and cranberry nut bread.

was a beautiful sunny warm day at some old friends place - for me, a long and pleasant drive thru rural highland TN.. very casual, we ate on the deck at a picnic table, smiled and laughed a lot. food enough that most took containers (pre supplied by a hostess with vision!) home. somehow some zucchini bread & turkey slipped from my hand in front of the dog.. he wagged his tail (that's good, right? 0-: ).

    til next year!

Pretty much done with overworked history and meals I dont enjoy that much. I was grateful to have the day off and grilled a t-bone.

    The day went great!
Tons of food, and tons went home with guests. SIL's invited workmate brought his GF, but all meshed nicely. It took two tables, and even then we were crowded. Dogs, while not well behaved, at least did not steal anything off the counter.
Now, I have to start turkey soup.
    Best to all!

Oooohhhh... just the opposite for me.

I love having a holiday which focuses on things we have to be thankful for. And I love the mob of family and friends coming together to create a feast. And the tradition. It brings back so many lovely memories of T'giving past.

My only quibble is that we have two very similar holidays, with the same (traditionally) sorts of menus... so close together. D'ya think we can move Xmas to February? <G>

I have to say ours was pretty tame from a traditional POV. We demured on a turkey; she bought a chunk of ham. No one came over; the daughter, her ex (who lives with them anyway), and the grandkids had their turkey dinner at their house, and came over for pie and gingerbread cookies after. I made the punkin pie in the morning and the granddaughter and Grammy conspired to make the gingerbread, cookies and tiny bread loaves, in the afternoon.

The evening of dessert was unremarkable, too. They brought the full size but completely undisciplined puppy with them, said doggo tearing through the house with new Christmas themed stuffed toys to turn into fluff balls. My Wife put on the Bill Murray movie Scrooged about ten minutes before the kids showed up, to boost the holiday atmosphere, and no one paid any attention to it, but it added to the clutter, while the kids and their mom spent more time on their phones than making conversation.

For dinner, rather than the ham dinner we had talked about, with side dishes, She proposed, late in the day, ham and cheese grilled sandwiches instead, which worked for me. No mention of colonizers, pilgrims or indigenous people and culture, no prayer or recounting of what we're thankful for, no fancy table cloth or Mom's fancy china. The Bill Murray movie was better than I remembered with a worthy cast and special effects, but I only saw the first ten minutes before the chaos ensued.

Meanwhile, the house is decorated inside to a fare-thee-well with all Her usual Christmas stuff, including the fake tree-in-a-box, now all decorated and lit. The WX is fine today, so we'll put up the single string of old-fashioned big-bulbed Christmas lights along the front of the house. She puts evergreen inspired wreaths with big red bows on the porch columns. Simple.
