Just as I have suspected all along.

Huge age gap shows up in AARP poll of Warnock-Walker runoff

    BY Chloe Folmar
    11/22/22 11:23 AM ET

A poll released on Tuesday by AARP, an interest group for those aged 50 and older, found a significant age gap in voters’ preferences in the Georgia Senate runoff election between incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and former NFL player Herschel Walker (R).

Warnock leads Walker by 24 percentage points among voters aged 18-49, while Walker leads by 9 points among voters aged 50 or older, according to the poll from AARP Georgia. The two groups differ in their preferences by a total of 33 points.

Voters are more supportive of Walker the older they are, according to the poll, which has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points among respondents 50 and older.

Respondents aged 65 or older favor Walker over Warnock by 13 points, while that lead shrinks to 4 percentage points among those aged 50-64.

Black voters aged 50 and up differ in preference from their age group overall, however, with Warnock holding an 83-point lead over Walker among such respondents. The margin of error for that group was 4.9 percentage points.

Overall, Warnock leads in the poll of all age groups by 4 percentage points, despite voters aged 50 and older constituting more than 60 percent of likely runoff voters.

That's a nationwide thing, and it's been increasing for a good long time now. It's one reason Republicans have been so crazed lately; they've hung their hats on the culture-war issues favored by their Evangelical Christian base, and they're losing. Every day some of their voters die, and every day some new voters with very different ideas turn 18.

    True enough.

But the demographic (and I will pause here for just a moment to apologize on behalf of all boomers everywhere) still trends toward dingbattery... more than others.

Given the relative age of boomers, we may be confusing dingbattery with dementia

What of 49-year-olds turning 50? Do they become gradually crazed, or are we saved once the boomer nutters die off?

I suspect it will depend on whether or not they can read fluently, and the comprehension of what is read. The boomers came of age when a television set was not in every home. In fact a television set was a rarity during the formative years, thus practically forcing reading skills upon us...

A 50 year old was born in 1972, 30 years after the war. Is that still a boomer?

People's ideas about lots of things seem to be surprisingly stable as they age. Not always, of course, but particularly about cultural things, that's the way to bet. Most support for legal segregation died with a previous generation of southerners, for example. Outside of the most conservative religious circles, I'd guess that opposition to same-sex marriage will die in the same way.

    Come on, he's more aptly a "Generation Jones," 1955 - 1964. Boomers are 1946 - 1954. A significant difference.

Yet, legal segregation is still practiced. Your use of legal was that there was a law forcing segregation. My use of legal was that there was no law forcing integration.

No, the boomers have been f234ing the rest of us for the past 40 years, just like the poor red states who take take take but vote against whats needed and good for the rest of us. F234 the boomers. Generally speaking, of course.
In the US this perverted idea of “blood and soil” over “constitutional principles” is the most radical and anti-democratic and anti-Conservative idea I have heard in my lifetime.

This county in the northern suburbs of Atlanta will vote very much in favor of Herschel, but I can't see him doing better against Warnock than Kelly Loeffler did back in January of 2021.

Beau argues that each generation pretty much stays at the cutting edge of its cohort, rather than moving forward to the cutting edge of the next younger generation.

So there are lots of people like me - born during or just after the second war - who resonate with Bernie. He's one of us.

And then, as financial security grew in the wake of the progressive benefits to those who came home from the war - the boomers - a whole different idea of how life should be settled into that generation. And we see Florida going for DeSantis.

Then the next generation, which rebelled against conscription and war adventuring, took refuge in self-actualization, aided by the widespread effort to get a post secondary educaion.

And now we see my grandkids' generation horrified at the environmental and social exploitation of their parents self-actualization.

Each generation ages carrying its value system as it goes, not changing to adapt to changing circumstances. Each value system looks more or less progressive depending on the point of view of the surrounding generations' perspective.
A society predicated on the assumption that everyone in it should want to get rich is not well situated to become either ethical or imaginative.

Median age in Australia is 37. Considering under 18's don't vote, the older half gets a disproportionate say. More than 50% of voters in Australia are over 55. Every whiff of altruism disappears around then it seems.

Voting tends to be against things that threaten older peoples wealth; making them pay for climate change, taxes on second and more houses, changes to health care.
In Oz boomers really own everything. They own their homes outright and often a couple more, they got free university education, cheap energy (guilt free) and so on. They are used to having it all and don't want to give any up, even if it literally costs the world. (Who cares about climate change when i'll be dead before that 30year sea rise is a problem..?)

There's a definite watershed age when those twilight years come into focus - politically, and society goes out the window - politically.

Boomers generally talk about how terrible the climate change they caused is, but they generally don't vote to stop it. They'll leave that to young people thank you very much. "Now, where's my chardonay... ah bugger, its not quite chilled enough, lets leave it for another little while".

Absolutely - that war shaped my last years of HS & first years of college - it was the herd of elephants in the room every day.

To the thread topic: I can't tell you how disappointed I am in my generation, as things seemed so amazing in the late 60's - early 70's - that we really were going to change the world. I guess the protest portion turned out to be a minority and the selfish a$$holes pulled to the fore. I truly did not see that coming & offer my apologies to succeeding generations.

Maybe if we'd all had to walk to school through 2 feet of snow uphill both ways instead of lazing about in school buses we woulda been better people?

Boomers span at least two " cultural cohorts." The oldest Boomers are indeed daughters of the Greatest Generation. Then there are Boomers, like myself, whose parents were post Korean War-Lebanon Conflict era to early Vietnam vets.

Think about it. Big changes occurred between 1946 and 1964. Crooners to the birth of rock and roll to the Beatles, for example, and " Boomers" are varied as a result.

This is getting a bit silly. There are a lot of factors that correlate with voting for conservatives in the US, some quote strongly, and age is only one.
    - Older people tend to vote for conservatives more.
    - Men tend to vote for conservatives more than women,
    - White folks tend to vote for conservatives more.
    - People who live in rural areas or smaller population centers tend to vote for conservatives more.
    - White people in the ex-Confederacy tend to vote for conservatives more (also the mountain west, but that's more just rural-urban).
    - White evangelical protestants and traditional Catholics tend to vote for conservatives pretty overwhelmingly.
    - White people with less formal education tend to vote for conservatives.

So if you're a white 73-year-old fundamentalist man living in rural Alabama, betting that you voted for Trump twice would very likely be correct. OTOH, if you're a 73-year-old non-religious black woman with a masters degree living in Boston, not so much.

It would be just as accurate to say 'You can lay the blame at the feet of the whites, or men, or rural folks, or the evangelicals, or the southerners, or the less-educated . . . '

The real problem is that the US right wing has gone completely bonkers.

all we need is for the white christian nationalism to percolate through the rest of society so it’s multi-ethnic non partisan nationalism and the Democratic Party can start fielding authoritarian friendly candidates to promise universal healthcare.
