The gambling companies here seem to be so excited you'd expect their executives to be foaming at the mouth……….

    I am anti-excited.

Normally I'd watch the heck of these games

But Qatar, with all that's been happening since the day one - no thanks, not gonna take part in this bloody corrupt mess.

Shame, 8 years between world cups is a long intermission

    Footy? Yawn..

That FIFA guy was off the wall with his ramblings. Especially with FIFA's history of corruption.

If the final was outside my window I'd close the curtains and watch something on Youtube.

    Pity it's Qatar.
Shame, I saw a brief interview with a person who is going to play in the WC for the first time, they were very excited, dream come true. It's where one gets conflicted.

I don't like that it disrupts the EPL season, or that it's in Qatar, but FIFA is thought to be the most corrupt sporting organization in the world, so it doesn't surprise anyone. The tales of the working conditions there for the construction workers reads like an OSHA (the occupational safety and health standards for employees in the States) nightmare, but what can you expect?

I will follow the US team on Monday against Wales, but I don't expect them to do anything noteworthy. And I will probably watch the semis and finals as well as the highlight shows. Yes, I will keep track of it. It's the biggest sporting event in the world. I am a Tottenham supporter so I will keep up with our guys (Argentina, Brazil, South Korea, England, etc..).

Try as I have over the years, I cannot get into this sport.

However, I have some Irish friends and family, and also some Turkish friends, all of whom will be rapt. For that reason, I will keep on eye on wins and losses.

Also, I am keeping a side eye on the soap opera elements.
Will some hooligans sneak in alcohol and get busted by the Qatar officials? Will Qatar show its national bigotry by sanctioning, or even arresting, some homosexual players or fans?

Just hoping it all remains contained within Qatar, we're a bit close for comfort here.

unfortunately, three of the guys i interact with daily (including my boss and his boss) are huge fans, so every zoom meeting for the past few weeks has turned to a world cup discussion. what to do? feign interest? nod occasionally? suggest we get back on topic?

When sports comes up as a discussion, I usually join in but make sure to mix things up a lot, like talk about dribbling the football down the field to score a goal. Sometimes people clue in that its a stupid thing to talk about.

    Excited? - not at all.
We have generally very little interest in football, don't look any matches (personally or TV/Web). World Cup (and European Championship) is an exeptional case. Then we look some matches, mostly if the German team is part.
But the Qatar thing stinks and we will not.

That was my feeling as well. Another example of the personification of the Acton Dictum --

But, to be fair, I've never been a soccer fan. I enjoyed playing it - in weekend pickup games at college and after, with some of the foreign students. Rugby also. But WATCH it? No thanks. I'd rather sort the big jar of beans... or dust the driveway.

My daughter and son-in-law love the sport in person, but world cup??? Naaah. For my part I'm just not a spectator of sports that I even like. Every three years or so I'll watch an AC (less so now that they're not using "boats") but personally I'd rather go float around.

Of course I'm not watching, soccer ugggg. The only thing soccer is good for it to add a little background color on foreign trips. Ya stroll down a exotic local and you see and hear guys scream watching the game on a small little TV in the back room as you drink your beer.

I don't get the inane sports lingo and COMPLETE OBSESSION with sats and lingo. I remember two occasions where the mind numbing sports only conversations were on the verge of being hysterical.

One was when I worked in the bull pen selling copiers, it was THE WORST JOB in the world. I worked with an ever rotating group of fresh out of school jocks & Bro'a. The lunch room was like watching Sports Center 24/7. The inane drone of " blaaa blaa blaa ran 34 yads on the first bla bla bla and then hit 12380u420u0- runs batted in and did you see the bla bla bla game last night and bla bla bla hit 0 for 20006786 for a bla bla bla - Seriously I don;t know enough lingo but it was as if the entire lunch room was talking a foreign language. Thats when I interrupted in my very best Nathan Lane from Birdcage impression and said: " Exxxxxxxusse me, but do you boys ever talk about anything other than sports and numbers ? I mean have any of you seen any good plays and what about show tunes whats your favorite ? There was dead silence ........ then a hysterical roar of laughter because they all got the joke.

The second time was when I must have done something wrong in a past life because I ended up working behind the stick at a sports bar in New Rochelle NY. Where I surrounded by complete sport nuts that made the lunch room look like a Book Club. I got the hang of making charming "sports like" conversation. I would interject in a conversation something like "OMG did you see that game last night ? Someone would inevitably inject their opinion, and I would parley that into a "Yea yea can you believe...." they then fill in the blanks and I would continue to riff on stuff I have no clue about. The best part was one of the waitresses who new I knew nothing about sports would get furious when customers would go man that bartender Joe has his finger on the game dynamics

World Cup Ski racing I'm very interested in!!
    Soccer? no.
Perhaps if they played on a smaller field so they didn't spend 90% of the time running up and
    down the field.

I am not a watcher of other people playing games, and especially those that are just doing their hughly paid job. Watching does not make you a sports person. Participating does.
