Australia had 220 million extra fans rooting for them yesterday. Unfortunately few were at the stadium, which looked like it was in Buenos Aires. Messi won, watched by some other fellows in similar kit.

Football/soccer struggles for attention in Australia. Aussie Rules is by far the dominant football code, followed by rugby league (yuk). Rugby union runs a distant 4th . But the Socceroos and the Matildas are very popular and the country unites in wishing them well in the big tournaments. Our structure was good, defence was sound, attack was well organised but then it all became Messi.

The Australian player and the Argentinian collide. The Argentinian grabs his head and collapses to the ground, rolling around trying to milk a penalty. That's one of the reasons soccer struggles for attention in Australia. Because the behaviour of the players is beyond pathetic and the refs play along with lots of arm waving and showmanship and award the penalty for over acting Makes me want to puke. JayInOz

Japan out through penalties. Penalty shootouts have to be the most stupid way to resolve a deadlock ever devised. Brazil slaughtering Korea, as expected, but still disappointing.

Lot of running for ninety minutes. Goals are not easy and to extend the game when everyone is dead tired. I find penalty kicks exciting. Hey I'm Serbian and played growing up.

120 minutes really. Yes but reducing numbers on each side after 90 minutes, and so on, would be much fairer.
