Am I the only one who cannot name a single player in this jamboree?
I'm afraid watching 22 adult men chasing a ball leaves me cold.

So Canada finally gets its first goal ever in World Cup play. History has been made and the team eliminated in the same game. C'est la vie, as they say. I'm glad Davies got it. It seems fitting.

The Japan v Costa Rica game was disappointing. The Japanese were dominant for the whole game but CR wins with one lucky chance. The nature of football but sad for the Japs. Now they probably need to beat Spain to go through. Possible but very unlikely.

Well, only three teams can finish the group stage on 9 points now and only two
could finish with 0. Fairly even really.

I felt sorry for Uruguay this morning. I thought they played much better than Portugal but Portugal scored a very lucky goal. I think Ronaldo claimed it but it didn't look like he touched the ball at all to me. I find Ronaldo's diving antics really distasteful, like Neymar's (from Brazil), so maybe I'm a bit one-eyed. FIFA declared some years ago that they were going to rid the game of diving but that doesn't seem to have happened. Having said that, I thought the ref this morning did a really good job of ignoring most of the nonsense, at least. I thought the penalty he awarded was ridiculous though.

Same here. I am really glad Neymar is injured.

OTOH, the constant sharp elbows, kicks to the foot, and hands to face by which defenders keep stopping the star players are a scandal, especially since we get to see them replayed in slow motion, with intent clearly displayed. I would card every one of them until they stop.

    You may be right.

In addition, anyone know what the point of the US messing with the Iranian flag was? Seems a childish action that does nothing but tick people off.

They earned their way into the knockout round Saturday against the Netherlands!

England with a 3-0 win over Wales.

In the three matches the US scored two goals, but it was enough.

So who is favored now to win it all? espn says France and Brasil. I thought France from the beginning. We shall see.

I already have friends telling me how badly the Netherlands will beat the US, but in my eyes the Baby Eagles have already won the day. The US had missed the last two Cups, and to qualify here and make it through with a squad loaded with guys already playing in Europe gives me a lot of hope for the future.

The best game I've watched was Argentina verses Mexico and I can't believe they lost to Saudi Arabia. Argentina plays Poland today. Lionel Massis of Argentina is one he'll of a forward.

Costa Rica was great yesterday and Germany is officially out. Who would expect that?
https://www.firesticktricks.com/free...ing-sites.html here are some ideas how to stream all the games if you are traveling with your laptop only (like me) and don't have any tv in your room. Took me a while to find it, so maybe will be helpful for someone else.

reckon there must be several hundred million people like myself on the planet whose only experience of this world cup is the replay of that egregiously out of bounds goal. lol.

The goal was in bounds, and FIFA sucks. They overcharge for the use of game footage. I noticed outlets like CNN end up describing what happened while showing still pictures of celebrating fans and players.

I generally think spectator sports are the opium of the people at best, and gambling rackets at worst. The only time I follow anything is once every four years during the World Cup. I know a lot of people who are like that, around the world. But once every four years we all follow the game. In our NGO, e-mails to backers in Germany, France, and England invariably end with comments on the games. In our countries you can hardly avoid it, such is the hoopla. Our rangers show up to work in the morning and the first words are something about the latest games. It is something a lot of Americans just aren't plugged into.

it's funny. i just searched. the way the decision is being justified now is by a still picture taken before the player's foot has reached a kicking position, in which perhaps an inch of the ball is still above the paint of the line. remarkably, it is the only image used now by the first dozens of stories on the controversy. tell me that image shows the player kicking the ball rather than still reaching for it.

i can't even find the overhead image now that clearly showed the ball out of bounds by several inches.

close enough to what? be called either way? well, maybe.

there was an overhead camera tracking the ball. images i saw yesterday showed the ball clearly out of bounds. like, half a ball width out. isn't it weird those images are not part of the story anymore?

    you said yourself "fifa sucks".

the outcome doesn't matter to me, but i think the crowd is being gaslit.

Close enough to not be worth arguing about. Close call, ruled valid, play on. That's how the game goes. I wish they would do more VAR on fouls.

i posted my impression from reporting i saw yesterday. my point stands: much of the world that has seen nothing of the wc saw that reporting on a blown call.

you corrected me with a definitive statement, which point you then casually abandon. "that's how the game goes". yeah, i know. no argument there.

    seen it now. pretty athletic.

to see that in context of a game requires a couple hours watching though, right?

i don't have time to spare from arguing on the internet.

The directly overhead shots show that the whole ball did not fully cross the line so, under the rules, the ball was not out.

Fantastic run for Japan - Germany and Spain!

My confidence in Brazil was dented this morning but I still think they'll win it.

USA could beat Netherlands and Aus could beat Argentina. I think y'all will hear the roar from wherever you are if Aus do win - maybe not in Argentina.
