Default It Ain't Like Riding a Bicycle

Got on Rollerblades for the first time in more than a decade. Used to be a pretty good skater --- rollerblades or ice. Thought it would all come back to me

    Nope. Gotta relearn...

I skated for the first time in almost 3 years last month. I managed to keep my feet under me, but WOW all those little control-muscles were angry.

I used to ski - but after a multi-decade hiatus, have 'learned' - the control is no longer there. Rollerblades looks fun - for youngsters!
There's a lot of things they didn't tell me when I signed on with this outfit....

wow, maybe it's time to give up hockey and take up sailing
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

There was some lively domestic-debate about restarting hockey vs going frostbiting. Hockey won because it happens after everyone else is in bed whereas frostbiting eats a whole day (and she'd have to make dinner). Plus I'd need to find a boat.

There's something to be said for having one's activities change with the seasons.

I brought my rollerblades when I did my europe-semester in '97. I absolutely got a lot of "damn yank" looks, but they were a great way to get around.
You learn a new city pretty quickly when you get the pedestrian perspective while covering ground at bicycle speeds.

Cobbles were a challenge, though not insurmountable.

Back when I was skating, I was always surprised how much ground you could cover on those little wheels.

Skiing I can still do and enjoy, roller blading I gave up about 10 years ago as I approached 70. Have not had an opportunity to ice skate for a very long time.

I don't know if anyone here has tried these, but this is what cross-country skiers use for training off-season. I don't have the courage for either these or the in-line skates because I know I'll wind up face down on the roadway. Still, they look like fun and perhaps a bit more stable.

I ice skate every winter. Can still skate backwards, stop on a dime, spin, etc.

Used to play hockey: 35 years ago!

    Now, I just skate.

I was about to spend my first night with a new girlfriend- she was eleven or twelve years older than me. I said I haven't done this for a while. She said it's just like riding a bicycle. I said I hope not- last time I rode a bicycle my bum was sore for a week JayInOz

I ice skated for the first time in decades a few years ago. It wasn't pretty! I found it hard to do and I was scared silly of falling and breaking a hip.
I still go flying down the side of a mountain on downhill skis. More cautiously than I did years ago, but I don't have the fear of falling as I do on skates.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

Absolutely, Docs tell me not to walk on concrete. I work in the middle of acres of concrete. I'm sure I could still skate fine but have lost the ability to land very well - no bounce, just thud then a slow check to make sure everything is in the right place.
