Mmmmmm . . maybe, maybe not. The longer the investigation takes, the fewer the dedicated fanatics who might try something really stupid if he's indicted, the more time there is to anticipate and prepare, and the less likely it is that Republican politicians will support him with any enthusiasm. Whining about how unjustly the poor guy is being treated, doubtless. The Republican revolt against Trump is real, but how deep it goes is hard to tell yet.

And with Trump, distinguishing between narcissistic idiocy and actual malice is very hard. He could have taken the documents to bandage his ego, someone could have looked at them in their unsecured room and sent the information of to their boss in Moscow or wherever, or he could have sold the i formation to the highest bidder. None of it is beyond him, nor some combination of all three; narcissistic idiocy and malevolence aren't at all mutually exclusive. And he was certainly NOT harmless.

Trump wasn't ignorant, or if he was, it was 100% intentional. A president, or a former president, has plenty of people who know the law to tell him what's legal and what isn't. He can listen or not; that's his choice.

It's the dark side of the policy of "it's easier to apologize after the fact than it is to get permission before the fact." In TFG's case, his apology needs to be made from a prison cell.
