Small Field Work/Camp trailer

I kinda like these for the direction I am going. Rugged little camper, solar and gas. Ton of access and locks for security. The top rack platform holds 500lbs.

Daughter and SIL just took delivery of one of these. Built in Portland. They love it.
They have an articulating off-road trailer hitch.

I like it.

But I’ve never understood the point of off-road tires on a trailer.

I own a small Hercules brand trailer made in about 1949. It was designed to be pulled behind a jeep and used same rims and tires, so could use the same spare. My father bought it and was disappointed when I found out that it wasn't military surplus. Military trailers of that time didn't have tailgates so they would float when crossing deep water.

I got a 6x12 used wells cargo. Like this bit with a ramp. Insulated, bench bed, little window/hatch in the side, roof vent already installed, tiny tot, some cabinets, sink, air con. Changed the wheels to match the Jeep. Ramp is a nice deck. Though barn doors have some appeal.

Feels pretty small inside. But cozy for one. Giant compared to a roof top tent. I’m living in it when working at my place. Pretty big and heavy for any real off road.

Nice to lay around in relative comfort in the wind and driving rain.

Those roof top tents run c. $6,000, and that Rivian slide-out camp kitchen is a $6,750 option.

Just get a Camp-Inn 560 Ultra. Weighs about 1,200 pounds. Has a little settee forward of the doors that converts into Pullman berths.

Jimmy is right - it really is about setting up an operational base came with storage. The camping part with fresh water and being able to clean up is a very nice part. The dual purpose of this trailer became evident when I was working out in places filled among fire waste, toxic materials and not being able to get out of the weather - sun and rain. being on top of a box truck sucked big time.

Usually it is not a problem.

Having this there would have made the weeks more bearable. And I could have operated on top of the trailer which has plenty of power and i could also bring along a generator.

Ford maverick awd w that trailer but get it repainted. I like the flat desert sand/ivory color. Good mileage as a daily driver , awd, enough hp to drive a light trailer freeway speeds.

Thanks. I put the tiny tot next to the cabinet. Sitting in it right now. Going to freeze tonight but it’s nice and warm. Looks like a random utility trailer from the outside (except for the Jeep wheels).

Does that Tiny Tot have a 3 inch flue? Did you run the chimney pipe out the side, or out the roof? How did you handle the penetration - insulation, airgap, what? How do you cover / handle the chimney/penetration when you're on the road and moving???

Up through roof. 3” pipe. I put an old aluminum tea kettle over it when stationary or raining. And lift the pipe and put a plastic jug under the pipe when traveling to catch any water.

1” air gap between the corrugated and wall using emt. Edit-conduit

High-temp silicone boot and collar at top. I forget the required clearances.

Perhaps it would be convenient if the bolt patterns were the same, but trailer tires are (should be) different for several reasons.

This is our camper bus.
480W of solar on the roof, with a 240 A/h lead acid battery. If the battery was lithium, I could halve the A/h capacity, and probably be OK with only 300W on the roof - if I was doing it again.....
Anyway, that keeps up with the lights, stereo, fans and a 130 litre 12v compressor fridge/freezer, on paper there's enough capacity for at least a couple of pitch black days. We run the fridge 24/7 over summer, the house battery system has no AC charger or connection to the vehicle electrical system.
Heating is a 3kW diesel fired unit that runs on about a 1/4 litre per hour. A 2kW unit would have been plenty big enough in retrospect.
That all works in the real world, no bs.

There are lots of options out there, depending on what you really need this trailer to do.

That's part of it. You want the the larger tires for clearance, the knobbyness is just for show on the trailer and I've never heard of someone leaving their $40,000+ trailer and kit behind, they all still carry a spare for the tow vehicle and in some cases the trailer, which brings it back to Teds point.

They suck for getting out for a piss at 2am. On the top of a vehicle, they raise the center of gravity too much and aerodynamics suck, and the tent tends to snag on trees brush on the trail, which is why most people are moving away from them. They, however, work better in this configuration but then at the prices these trailers and tents go for, you might as well buy a camper designed for off-roading, more aerodynamic for getting to the trailhead and better at being bear resistant and a lighter package all together.

The thing about trailers is they are also anchors. Leaving aside offroad, you can't leave it anywhere while galavanting. Parking is restricted and towns are problematic.

Why not get a simple van? I lived in this for 5 years while working and doing boat work all the while.

Eberspacher, strongbox, gas locker, food cupboard, cook stove with cowling and inline fan (petrol boat engine room blower), aluminium frame holding up bed (adjustable level), cold box, water, clothes plus gear, cupboard for smaller stuff that becomes a table. Insulated, blacked out and very discreet; noone knows your in there. I once slept in Kensington, an extremely rich area of London for a week with no problems. I had a small drop down workbench at the back with a vice on it. About the length of a station wagon car too.

I now have the shorter version T4 which is being done in similar fashion, but with differences. It will have a wood stove that heats a hot shower and no compressed gas in it; switching to Origo. Will have 220 volt too.
