...........fighting against the deliberate polarization of politics...
My first real job was in Bavaria, aged 15. I lied that I was 16, and got a job guiding in the mountains and rivers of Southern Germany and Austria for the families of US and UK troops stationed there in the 80's. The guides slept in an army tent camp made in the forest.. and towards the end of the summer the beer tents came through to a place at the bottom of the valley...every week a different one. The first company to visit was Spaten.. you could say I lost my German beer virginity to that company, so it will always have a tender place in my heart!
So the curious name is apparently from the malt shovel
Wiky:
"Spaten" means spade in German, and the symbol of the brand is a malt shovel. "Franziskaner" means Franciscan in German, and the picture on the label is of a Franciscan friar.

A youngster.. they only started brewing in 1397.
The standard on the left is 5.2%, the Oktoberfest special is 5.9%.
I have set my fridge so that they are on the cusp of viscosity.
The vegetables are all frozen to hell.
A fine choice to pledge allegiance to.

"They have a lot of stupid people that vote in their primaries. They really do. I'm not really supposed to say that but it's an obvious fact. But when stupid people vote, you know who they nominate? Other stupid people." -- James Carville on the plethora of low-quality GQP candidates in the mid-term election.
I was introduced to Spaten 40 or more years ago, by Charlie Reysen, who owned a gin mill named Wagon Wheels.
So-called, good, beer was not a thing back then, at least not in my area or in my crowd. Molson or Heineken or Becks, maybe, but those were it.( Of course, Guiness was copiously consumed but thats a different bird)
Charlie liked these Spatens, and didnt really sell them, but drank them himself.
One night, I was sitting at his bar, it was three deep and he was busy. He walked up, poured me this beer with lemon, and walked away without a word. Just a gesture from an upturned chin.
Like, try it.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.
