    Default live trapping mice

What to do with them that does not involve stupid long trips to walmart.

I have been taking them across the street and throwing them in the college kid rental house yard. Their friends are parked on the sidewalks, taking up two spaces between driveways with one car, and other manner of self centered stupidity.

This is not a call for any kind of advice either, just a mildly funny ( to me) confession. Why the damn mice have invaded and why they get live trapped is not up for discussion.

    Cheers,

I stopped live trapping when I realized I could catch a skunk. So the armadillo and opossum have the run of the yard.

Tyson spoke to this in Colbert last week. His view is if you release the mouse, it just gets eaten by something bigger. When it comes to mice in my house, I am more concerned about a humane death than a humane release.

I doubt many mice die of old age, trapped or not.

I set 12 rat traps up at the place. Been a couple of weeks. Ugh.

I catch packrats in a wire-mesh live trap. A few years back, one of local oligarchs was trying to close a public road that several people here use to reach their jobs in the next valley, because it overlooked his McMansion. So my packrat catch was relocated to the general vicinity of his place.

Lately, I release them in nice spots with shade and water, across the border in Colorado.

Wow. Ever wonder what someone like that is like day-to-day?

Mice don't have a chance in my house.
Our cat is a great mouser.
We were awakened at 5 a.m. the other day to the sound of him eating a mouse under our bed.
Not a sound you want to wake up to.

Aren't cats great? When I lived in a tent-shack with poly sheeting walls as a young man I had no way to keep my outside cat from coming inside with his latest kill, as he would just tear a new hole in the wall. One night I heard him, got up, and stepped on something slimy. I turned the flashlight on a bloody blob and it took some scrutiny to figure out it was a skinned jawless eyeless rabbit head. He'd saved the best part of the rabbit for me, stew-pot ready.

A kind hearted friend tried to kill a glue trapped mouse with carbon monoxide, by holding it in the exhaust of his car. The heat from the exhaust softened the glue and Mr. mouse escaped.

We live trap any that survive our cats' return to this house. But taking them "across the street" isn't nearly far enough: I free them, with a dollop of crunchy peanut butter, in some open woodland a couple of miles away.

Link says they are electric (battery). What triggers the trap? A motion sensor in the bait area?

When I use a trap, I toss the carcass in the woods. Next day it is gone. Some critter comes along and gets them.

I have been using these, https://www.homedepot.com/p/Harris-C...LIVE/306929732

less expensive on line. The battery ones are nice but hard on D-cell batteries. When the mouse gets to the end of the bait trap tunnel the front legs are on pos and the back legs ground (maybe vice versa), and zap.

This link explains how the trap is sprung. The lid to the bait chamber is forced upwards by the mouse sticking his head in there and the trap is sprung by the upwards movement of the lid.

I don't care in the tiniest way where they end up, including a scavenger's gullet or not, as long as they're never in my Corn Flakes box.

    Outside: Live and Let Live.

    Inside: Die Immediately.

This is Experience talking, from growing up in an 1850's farmhouse. All my siblings are supporters. No guilt.

At one point, when I was about 13, I went on a trapping binge and spring-loaded half the rooms in the old place. Peanut Butter Rounds every night before bed. Much focus. Devious placements.

But, after days, weeks, of being woken up at 04:00 by multiple Spring-Snaps, disturbing much more pleasant dreams, I simply learned to eat the oatmeal -- it got cooked.

I have some of those. I find them tripped and empty of bait. With no mice. We’ve had a bad infestation in the garage. The cat catches plenty but not all. I think I’m finally getting ahead of the situation. I have replaced the garage door seal with a rodent deterring one. It has shards of SS in the rubber to inhibit chewing.

The pot roast I cooked up this last Sunday, I used caraway seed, I cleaned up all the stray seed to keep the wife from fearing rodent droppings were in the kitchen.
