    Thanks for the good wishes.

Last year I spent my birthday moving rocks, small and large around re-landscaping our small back yard garden:

Yeaterday in the finished garden I grilled chicken and ribs for a small celebratory bbq afternoon and evening:

Earlier in the day, I took steps to increase the odds that I will be around for another bbq next year – got my annual flu shot and the new Covid bivalent vaccine.

So far I have beaten the odds and have made it past the biblical span of three score and ten, and while I have acquired some of the infirmities of age, I figure I still have a way to go before I get to Shakespeare’s “mere oblivion; sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste . . ..”

Indeed, I recently started to build a skin on frame canoe; as most paddlers past the age of 65 or so knows, canoes get heavier every year. I am modifying a building form I acquired this summer at the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association’s annual assembly:

and with the help of a friend, have reduced two 16’ white oak planks (2” x 10” and 1 ½” x 10 – weighing about 130 pounds each) to manageable sizes to become gunwales, stringers, and ribs, and hope to finish it by spring for a fair amount of paddling next summer and fall. I’ll let you know how it goes on BD 79 next September.
