Virginia Executive Mansion gets bulletproof glass
Plans are afoot to install bulletproof windows in the Executive Mansion where Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne Youngkin reside when they are in Richmond.
What’s happening: The fortifications were recommended as part of a larger security review of Capitol Square, Georgia Esposito, the mansion’s executive director, said Wednesday.
- Temporary inserts are installed first while permanent bulletproof windows are built, she said.
What you say: Esposito told members of the Citizens’ Advisory Council on Furnishing and Interpreting the Executive Mansion at a meeting Wednesday that the inserts wouldn’t spoil the mansion’s exterior appearance, but would stand out inside.
- “Once I got used to making changes to the house, I was surprised it wasn’t that long ago,” she said.
Using the numbers: The state’s Department of General Services declined to comment on the cost of the upgrade, calling it a safety issue.
The Citizens’ Council also heard reports of ongoing work to reupholster, polish silver and replace carpets.
- Esposito also said plans are in the works to remove wall-to-wall carpeting in the women’s salon, a room near the front door that she said has picked up a dog ring odor, which she says cannot be attributed to the two miniature dogs should The Youngkins have recently moved into the mansion.
- “They’re not crazy tinkerers, but there have been a few here who left their business cards in the ladies’ salon, and if you go in there and snoop around, you’ll know what I mean,” she said.
