Many years ago I was tied up to the dock at Ganges, Saltspring Island, and there was a couple with a small boy on the boat next to me. We were talking when the mother asked their son what he wanted for dinner. 'Roast beef' the boy said. 'We're vegetarians' the mother said to me, 'he's never had meat in his life'. That boy is now grown up, and I bet he's had lots of roast beef.
