Default 2.5 million ants per person

    boy are we important

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/clima...0-quadrillion/

A new estimate for the total number of ants burrowing and buzzing on Earth comes to a whopping total of nearly 20 quadrillion individuals.
10 steps you can take to lower your carbon footprint

That staggering sum — 20,000,000,000,000,000, or 20,000 trillion — reveals ants’ astonishing ubiquity even as scientists grow concerned a possible mass die off of insects could upend ecosystems.
In a paper released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of scientists from the University of Hong Kong analyzed 489 studies and concluded that the total mass of ants on Earth weighs in at about 12 megatons of dry carbon.
Put another way: If all the ants were plucked from the ground and put on a scale, they would outweigh all the wild birds and mammals put together. For every person, there are about 2.5 million ants.

For every person there are 2-1/2 million ants? Geez, can we have smaller serving sizes?

I am going to have to keep this from my daughter, She has an ant phobia, not really myrmecophobia just another manifestation of her MS. I have seen her standing, watching a crack in the window sill so the moment one pops out she will nail it with bug spray.
I am not going to tell her She has 2,499,999 more to go.

That few? I'm surprised at that.
There was an experiment a few years ago where they toook feral Argentine ants from a nest in Spain, and introduced them into a nest in Belgium. They were not attacked, fitted right in. Researchers concluded, rightly or wrongly, that it was the same ant colony in both places.

Tasty in soups, salads, and casseroles, too.
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

Biologist Edward O. Wilson speaking with Terry Gross in 1994.

GROSS: What would happen to the world if all the ants were to magically disappear?

WILSON: Terrible things. Let me preface my response by saying that, of course, we will do everything in our power to save the human species. That is the entire meaning of our own lives. But if the human species were to disappear from the Earth, the Earth would go on unperturbed. In fact, the ecosystems of the world would regain their previous equilibrium. And short of some great meteorite strike, the planet could count on another billion years or so of undisturbed evolution amidst great biological diversity. But if ants, these little despised creatures at our feet, were to disappear, because they are such vital parts of the ecosystem on which the turning of the soil and the removal of dead animals and the predation on other kind of animals and so on is vital, if they were removed, then we would see a partial collapse of the ecosystems on the land. Probably many thousands of other species would become extinct. Soon after, would - many plants would go extinct and so on. There would be a major reorganization and a depauperization of the land ecosystems. The world would suffer if it lost an important group like the ants.

    This story has legs!
