tRump is proposing that he & DOJ split the costs. DOJ says, he wants it, they don't, he should pay. If I were the judge hearing that argument, I'd agree with the DOJ. More importantly, I'd require tRump to post a bond for an amount equal to the highest estimate of the relevant costs. Said bond to be in place before work on/with a special master commenced.

More to the point... what does Trump, or his handler, have on him?

Good point.

Am I the only one who thought "special master" must be a bdsm term.
Meanwhile back at the hideout, while all the special master business is getting aired and sorted and the rubes are trying to figure out which shell the nut is under, DoJ still has the mandate to prosecute trmp for having the extensive cache of highly classified material, constituting several felonies. And also still needs to conclude an investigation into who might have gained access to the classified materials. And no special master, not even a very, very special one, has any power or authority to deny those facts. It cannot be the case that trmp has any privilege, not of his former office,* nor of communications with any of his attorneys, not even the real ones, that would allow him to retain those classified materials, nor any of the not classified material that belongs in the national archive. It seems most likely that they are building a much more extensive case of treason and perhaps espionage against trmp, which, of course, we the public will never know any details of until it’s wrapped up and produces indictments. And we the people will have to have trust in the DoJ and judiciary.
I am holding fast to the belief that trmp is finally going to actually face criminal prosecution without being able to weasel out in his usual manner.
In deference to Jim's wordy analysis, I concur.
I have a question that has been fermenting away in my head….. are all the documents tRump had meant to be returned and stored with the National archives? If so do they have a secure, faraday cage facility for storage of those designated documents? Or were some of the documents of higher security classification meant to have gone back to their original secure location and tRump has refused to return them?

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
The power of the web: Anyone can post anything on the web
The weakness of the web: Anyone can post anything on the web.
As I understand it, from being a layperson following the news, is that in the many boxes trmp took from the White House were three categories of paperwork, one, stuff that legitimately is his, two, official White House communications, all of which are meant to be stored in the National Archive, and even though he was president* and he might even have authored some of it, none of it is for him to keep, and three, all the many boxes of classified stuff which belong not to him nor in the National Archive, because of the security issue. And his stuff and the non-classified White House stuff and the classified stuff were all mingled, which looks both like he and his team were sloppy in the last minute choice to vacate the official premises, and that he was trying to hide the classified stuff, which a thief might be suspected of doing.
To questions fermenting in heads: considering the amount of material illegally taken by the orange one, and his propensity to create distractions I increasingly suspect all of the document theft has been to try to obscure some really damning evidence of his and his cabals treason. I agree with Jim that tumps about to finally be prosecuted for his crimes. It will be satisfying to see.
They are scared of what’s going to happen when he gets indicted, period. And of course, a part of that is a large part of our national police force is sympathetic to Trump’s cause. There will be blood, but do they fear that more than the man running for public office again?

One thing made me wonder. There was mention that there are some empty binders that presumably held classified documents. Wouldn't the agencies that presented those documents know that they had not come back from the Presidential briefings?
An update on the special master proceedings:
Trump, DOJ lawyers to convene for first conference with special master | The Hill
The newly appointed special master who will review the documents recovered from Mar-a-Lago directed lawyers for former President Trump and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to meet with him in New York on Tuesday for their first conference.
Judge Raymond Dearie, who was appointed as special master in the case on Thursday, called on Friday for a meeting and invited the two parties to suggest items for discussion, according to a court filing...............

Judge Aileen Cannon rules Trump has to pay 100% costs associated with the special master..... is she feeling a bit of pressure here to move toward impartiality? I would think so.

Sure... he'll pay.
As long as he is required to post a bond for maybe double the estimates costs. Then the bonding agency will pay. Barring that... good luck.
